Any one know the Iron Bowl record for 1st year coaches? I remember reading somewhere that most coaches lose their 1st Iron Bowl.

I think Terry Bowden is the only Auburn coach to win his first Iron Bowl.

Bear Bryant lost his first.
Ray Perkins lost his first.
Bill Curry lost his first.
Stallings won his first.
DuBose lost his first.
Franchione won his first.
Shula lost his first.
Saban lost his first.

Mike Donahue beat Alabama his first year (1904) 29-5
Rober Kent won his first (and only) in 1902 23-0
Walter Hudson "Billy" Watkins won both his games against alabama in 1900 and 1901. 53-5 and 17-0.
John Heisman won his first and only in 1895 48-0.
G.H. Harvey won his first and only in 1893 40-16.
D.M. Balliet won his first (and only Auburn game he coached) in 1892 32-22.
and Terry Bowden won his first in 1993 22-14.

Including interim coaches, Auburn has had 9 coaches since the rivalry was reinstated in 1948, of those 9, 1 won their first iron bowl, 1 has a shot this Saturday to make it 2 out of 9.

In the same time span, Alabama has had 11 coaches, (1 interim coach just for a bowl game)3 of which won their first iron bowl.

Dye and Tubs both won. Not sure about Shug or Bear.

So, Tubs, Dye, Shug all won #7.

FWIW, Bryant also won #7 then lost #8.

ETA: Stallings won #7 as well in his last season with bama.

Seems like that is 5-0 going back to 1957 for coaches in their 7th IB.

Bama is 2-0 in the IB following back-to-back NC seasons. Data was incomplete, when I queried for Auburn.

Alabama:
Bryant lost his first.
Ray Perkins lost his first.
DuBose lost his first.
Saban lost his first.

Auburn
Pat Dye lost his first.
Tommy Tuberville lost his first.
Gene Chizik lost his first.

What else did all these Iron Bowl HCs have in common? They all won their second.

I'd be okay with that result for Malzahn.
