I asked this last Saturday, but did not receive a definitive answer.
What is the difference between the black and white "bones" given to UGA players? How is each earned?
This is something I've wonder every time I see UGA play.
TIA

Black are for academics

One is for academics and one is for on the field play...can't remember which though.
Also unsure about how each is earned

White bones are for on the field plays, offense or defense.
Black bones are for assignments carried-out properly. Assignments given during pregame strategy sessions.

How are they earned since they show up during the season and finals obviously are wrapped up before bowl games.
Does a player tell the coaching staff he got an A on a test to receive one or something similar?

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about that.

The best is when somebody like Ogletree comes around and has a helmet full of white stickers but no black ones

No clue. I'm sure they check grades periodically. I know they have girls outside of classes making the football players sign in to make sure they're going. Maybe they get some kind of ones for attendance.

I took horticulture with Ogletree and we had to decorate pumpkins for like 2% of our grade. He got the award for the least effort.

To earn a black bone, the player must get an A or B on an assignment (whether it's a test, project or quiz) that's worth at least 10% of his grade in that class. In some cases, players may qualify for a black bone by participating in forms of community service or making the Dean's List. Academic advisors are always monitoring each player's performance in class by talking to their professors and keeping an eye on their grades. The advisors aren't just checking in on them from afarthey have a strong personal relationship with every football player. And that relationship starts earlier than you may think.

Wrong. Just plain wrong.
Black bones are awarded when a particular player is given a specific assignment for a game ... like blocking Clowney or blocking for a specific gap play or covering a specific WR in a given situation. A special, specific, assignment.
Black bones have nothing to do with academic classroom achievement. They are for football classroom assignments that are accomplished on game day.

That explains it.
Not sure if any other schools that does the helmet sticker thing awards for off the field achievements, great idea for those that do.
Of course now everyone knows how to identify the dummies and underachievers.

Um, no. IDK if you're trolling or not, but black bones are for in the classroom performance. White bones are for on the field performance. End of story.

Okay then, evidently I was told wrong. I asked a former Dawg player that same question myself while in Augusta not all that long ago ... and he told me it was for assignment football, not classroom. He called them the Bone-a-fides and said Richt was big on assignments being carried out on the field.
Evidently I was told wrong - mea culpa. Or either it has evolved into what it is today because he played for Richt when Right first arrived. Has his old helmet sitting behind his desk in his office.

It's always been that way. He must have explained it wrong.

Yeah, I just called him and gave him a ton of shite for that ... but he says y'all are correct, I just misunderstood him. He said I probably mistook "assignment related" for assignment football, which I guess I did. Y'all are right though - it is definitely academic achievements in the classroom away from the football field or the position classrooms.
Wiki simply defines it as this:
Georgia - White Bone (football excellence) and Black Bone (academic excellence)
Now I have to call another friend of mine and correct myself - I told him wrong earlier this year.
