Serious question. Lou Holtz built that into a respectable program, and Spurrier has raised to a highly competitive one. Those are two big names in coaching - Spurrier arguably a legendary name - and they have yet to win a conference title up to now.

Obviously, if he was given 15 years and unlimited resources, the answer is yes. But if Nick Saban were suddenly to take the South Carolina job with current expectations and talent, and we assume he has 5-6 years left before he retires...could he get it done?

Yes.

In the SEC, CNS could win Nattie at all schools except KY and Vandy- BUT if they devoted resources he could get them SEC east titles

Mizzou actually has great talent on defensive line and at WR this year.

I don't know. Steve Spurrier is no slouch, and he's been there long enough to get it done if he had the "magical" touch.

I think there's a reason that national championships are almost always won by traditional powers, and not only because of poll bias. It's damn hard to build a program into a very top level elite competitor.

Do you say yes because you think Nick Saban would be able to recruit insane levels of talent to South Carolina the way he did at LSU and Alabama? Or do you think he would be able to turn that very good talent at South Carolina into elite?

I think that Saban could recruit better talent to SC than Spurrier has. Yes, we have had some top notch players, but not near at the level that Alabama, Florida, LSU, or Georgia has. Spurrier has turned 3-star recruits into studs since day one like Sidney Rice, Ko Simpson, DJ Swearinger, Devin Taylor, etc who are all currently in the NFL. However, we have only landed three 5-star recruits in 9 years that I can remember. Lattimore, Clowney, and Chris Culliver. Bama gets three-plus each year, and I think that has a lot to do with Saban's recruiting ability. The thing that sets Saban apart is that he not only lands the great recruits, but he knows how to motivate and develop them.

Yes. South Carolina is a much better program than LSU was when Saban took over in 2000 and he turned them into a powerhouse and national champion. There's no reason why he can't do the same at South Carolina. Also, the SEC East is really down right with UGA, Tennessee and Florida all under-performing well below their standards. There's no reason why he can't go 11-1 or 12-0 with their schedule.

Spurrier couldn't carry Saban's jock strap. He hasn't got the initiative (who has?) and dedication of Saban, plus he doesn't understand the "process".

Now that he's established? Yes. If he would've have went there from Michigan State? No.

Maybe a better question is could Saban have won as many titles at South Carolina had he gone from the Miami Dolphins straight to South Carolina. Going from Alabama to South Carolina the answer is obviously yes because of what he has accomplished at Alabama. The administration would be willing to devote the resources to him and players would be willing to go there.

Wut? Check out LSU's record before Saban got there. They were awful, certainly far worse than South Carolina is with Spurrier right now.

Yeah

South Carolina was coming off 0-11 the offseason Saban came to LSU

But yeah, they were head and shoulders better

He is good enough to probably win it at State. I'm sure he would have to grind for a couple years with that sunbelt quality roster and stadium they have.

We're not talking about South Carolina in 2000. We're talking about South Carolina right now. And if you want to get into comparisons, LSU's record from 1990-1999 wasn't much better than South Carolina's record in the previous decade before Spurrier got there.

LSU (1990-1999)

54-58-1
2 AP top 25 finishes
3 bowl wins

South Carolina (1995-2004)

49-64-1
2 AP top 25 finishes
2 bowl wins

South Carolina doesn't have near about the recruiting footprint that LSU has and always have.

Not without the built in advantages of coaching at Bama.

Saban's ability to evaluate and accumulate talent has been vastly exaggerated. The reason his recruiting classes rank so high is because of the "Bama Bump"
that recruits get by the services when signed by Saban. The REC has infilitrated the services in order to give the appearance that Alabama has more talent than it
actually does. This helps with preseason rankings and gives them the benefit of the doubt over other non conference teams in the BCS standings. Do you think that USCe gets the benefit of the doubt that Alabama got in 2011 and 2012? Of course not. But if their talent on paper looks better, they might.

At USCe, CNS would not have the refs in his pocket like he does at Bama, nor would he have the scheduling advantages.

One only has to look at the NFL to see the fraud he has built at Bama. When the offensive line is allowed to hold at will, they create giant holes for their running backs to run through. The talent of these backs, and all of Bama's players really, are vastly overrated due to playing weak opponents and having the ref's on their side. This is why all of Saban's players are busts in the NFL.

There is no way that CNS could win a national title at South Carolina.
