Personally I wasn't initially happy when Mizzou joined the SEC for three reasons: 1) Mizzou was losing all of its traditional rivals 2) I thought Mizzou would have a hard time competing in football or worse 3) I wasn't a big SEC fan. Two years into the move I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I am now very glad Mizzou made the move. Look I don't know how well Mizzou is going to do in the future in football, but I like the way the conference works and I love the passion of the SEC fans. Good or bad at least most of the fan bases care. I never felt that way in the Big 8/Big 12. And although there is a lot of sniping, I do get the feeling most of the fans are not just fans of their team, but also of the SEC.

No, we instigated the A&M to the SEC talk.
Slive proved to be amenable, but it was because we went looking for a better situation.
Master stroke: t.u. didn't expect us to walk. We called their bluff.

And that's the bottom line. That is truly what makes this conference different. A lot of that has to do with our Southern heritage.

Oh, okay. I get it. Y'all have been instructed to stick by that "no prior contact" story until the end. Good call. You can never tell if the Big 12 spies might still be lurking.

If we hadn't stepped up and made noise about making a change, A&M would be in the Pac12 with t.u. and a handful of other big12 defects.
OF COURSE Loftin and Slive had had prior contact. That's why we had the confidence to call bevo's bluff.

There was no selling necessary. The SEC door has always been open to the Aggies. When it became clear this time that it was really going to happen, Slive and the conference's presidents were jumping up and down in joy.
There was equally no hesitation about adding Mizzou, IMO. The only unknown was Mizzou's administrative interest in the SEC. It was obvious that many Tiger fans wanted to be in the SEC, but the academic appeal of the Big X to MU's administration and faculty posed a hurdle to the union. When the Big X offered a limited, earn-your-way-into-our-conference plan, Mizzou jumped into the open, welcoming and immediate-full-membership arms of the SEC.

That's not really accurate. We we're fairly competitive in Basketball and Baseball in the conference at various intervals during the 90's we just weren't very good at football. In fact we won the sec in in basketball in 97. Just saying.

OP is right, Arkansas was an awful addition to the SEC in 1992
Disagree on the "several years" though.....at what point have they risen to relevancy in their time in the SEC? Did I miss a Heisman or top 5 finish somewhere in there?

Missouri split during the war. Part of the state was pro-union; part was rebel.
There are quite a few Missourians that celebrate Quantrill Day every August 21st. In fact, in a mock trial the University of Missouri School of Law recently found Quantrill not guilty of any alleged crimes during his righteous action against the jayhawks.
In states like Missouri it really was brother against brother. And parts of the state still have not healed - even after 150 years. Missouri supplied more than 150,000 troops to the grinder - roughly 3 union for every rebel. And the state was one of the most active - more than 1,200 engagements, making Missouri the site of more battles than any other state save Virginia and Tennessee. Missouri was the site of continued Civil war battles through the 1880s as various tough guys, militia leaders, and guerrillas continued to raise forces to "Save the South."
So the question of were we Union or Rebel is a lot more complicated in Missouri than it was for some of you. And the question still is not settled. North of I-70 you will more Union leanings. South of I-70 more Rebel leanings. Hell, down south of Springfield, you can probably still find towns that think Jim Crow is acceptable. But the Tiger play in the Berkley of Missouri - Columbia.
