I mean, at this point don't you think the coaching staff has tried everything to get Yeldon and Drake to hold the ball better? If it hasn't worked by now it's not going to.

RB's come in 3 varieties when it comes to ball security.

The vast majority of RB's are just ok, they don't fumble alot or a little, it just happens sometimes.

There are small handful of RB's who have exceptional ball security and seem to hardly ever fumble.

Then there are those who are chronic fumblers and it is seemingly a problem that can never be fixed.

I hold my breath every time they run it.

As best I can tell the problem is that they swing the ball away from the body all the time as they try to cut. You can't swing your elbow out like a chicken wing with the ball.

I think they can fix it.

but i'd like to see Henry get some more carries. I think he could destroy AU's defense.

Eddie Lacy had some fumbles early in his career, but didn't have any last year. (or maybe one)

That's what I've observed all too often this year especially with Drake. The aggravating thing is that it can be fixed. I doubt Ingram and Trent just naturally carried the ball so tight to their bodies. It was a practice that was learned and reinforced through repetition. Not sure why it's not happening with TJ and Drake.

I wonder if it has to do with their body types compared to Trent/Mark. Yeldon and Drake both have an almost WR "All purpose back" type body. Both are kinda lanky for a RB with longer arms.

The one Yeldon had yesterday is very difficult to protect as I see with a lot of his fumbles.

Drake's seem fixable though.

With Drake I think his running style contributes to his ball security issue. He relies a lot on exceptional burst through the hole. You get more burst pumping both arms hard than you do one. Pumping both arms while going across the LOS = increased chance of fumble.

Yeldon loves his stiff arm a little too much some times.

Some of the fumbles have come from reaching out for the goal line and that is definitely fixable.

What is crazy is I feel like we lose every fumble. MSU fumbled the ball a few times last night and seemed to fall on every one of them.

With TJ I think it is because he tries too hard to get extra yardage. TR and Lacy could move piles at will, TJ can sometimes, but most of his power is just popping people. He tries to stay up and keep getting yardage, and loses his control of the ball.

Karma for the Old Miss game (I think) where we fumbled three times and recovered all three.

Yeah Lacy was a boss at fumbling his freshman year. Last year I don't know if he fumbled once. Maybe, I cannot remember. But he definitely fixed the problem.

Seems like "high and tight" has fallen by the wayside with these two.

That's what I was going to say. Neither one of them holds the ball against his body. Lacy stopped fumbling because he stopped holding the ball like a loaf of bread and started holding it like a football.

Lacy's fumbling was extremely overblown. He had one bad fumble and then one freak fumble. The freak fumble was near the goal line where a dlineman got flipped and his foot struck Lacys basket as he came driving towards the goal line. Any back would have lost that one. But since it wasn't long after the first he all of a sudden got this bad rep.

Yeldon and Drake both scare me every time they touch the ball.

I think a fair amount of TJ's fumbles have been just hat on the ball type hits. Drake holds the ball away from his body. He is the one that really scares me. As talented as he is, he won't last long in the NFL if he carries it like that.

I remember reading or hearing last year that during practice the defense really tries to rip the ball out of the carriers hands all the time. Even when they aren't running a play. Supposed to help with ball security.

Drake needs to start carrying the ball in the correct hand for starters..

While he has improved as the year progressed, Yeldon still needs to work on running behind his pads in traffic. He still runs too tall a good bit of the time.

But that said, his fumble Saturday was just a good hit..hat on ball. That's going to happen once in a while. Since A&M his ball security seems better.

Should Drake be getting more carries?
