Apparently Ty Johnson, who was scheduled to sit out 10 or so games as part of his year of ineligibility due to transferring from Villanova, has now been cleared by the NCAA to play immediately! He's playing officially in our season-opener vs Longwood right now!
This is a huge boost to the team, as we now get a PG with some college-playing experience - even if it's only limited while at 'Nova. Coach Martin raved about Johnson's leadership during the offseason, so his immediate contribution should help the young Gamecocks through the early season...

What impact could this have for the team? Ty scores 3 pts in the first half, then scores 15 in the 2nd half to finish as team leader with 18 pts, on 6-9 from the floor (0-1 from 3), and 6-7 at the stripe! Also had 2 assists, 2 rebs, 1 stl, and 1 blocked shot, with 4 turnovers.
Thornwell started slow with 0 points at the half, but opened up with all 14 of his pts in the 2nd stanza. Williams also had 14 pts, and Carrera had 12 pts with 9 rebs. Kacinas had 8 pts and a career-high 14 boards to lead the Gamecocks. Notice had 8 pts, 5 rebs, and 4 assists before fouling out.
Gamecocks win 82-44. An easy game but we got all the players into the game. A great start to the season! We next step up in competition this Tuesday by going on the road to top-25 Baylor. THAT will be the first true test, but I'm happy we'll have Johnson manning the point for us now...

Just got back from the game.
We've got potential and TJ looked big time. They didn't announce he was eligible until game time so there was a lot of excitement at tip off.
Bruce is going to have a hard time beating him out for starter honors when he returns.
Johnson has a sweet stroke and is a real field general out there.
This team is going to surprise some people. Can't wait for the Baylor game Tuesday.

Some of my other observations.
I love having a #4 at PG. I don't know why, but I've always thought #4 was the perfect number for a PG.
We are going to be hell on wheels on D this year. We may lose some games, but it will not be for playing tenacious D.
Williams is a shooter.
Carrera was overlooked today - but he played a great game on both ends.
When was the last time we had a player wear #0?

another great point. those were the most notable.
rebounding and blocked shots were great today, and I'm looking forward to that Baylor game even though we'll likely lose

I was 3 rows off the court and they looked much improved...excited to see what we can do this year. I think if we finish better than 6th in the SEC thats an accomplishment
