Mississippi State 6, #1 Alabama 3.

Alabama had won 28 straight games, and was rolling to their third straight national championship. The upset opened the door for Georgia to win the national title by beating Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.

The following Tuesday, Reagan beat Carter and it became the greatest four day period in Mississippi State history.

Georgia got a late kickoff return to beat Florida the next week, or MSU would have won the SEC Title that year.

So are you implying if the stars align correctly and Mississippi State beats Carolina tomorrow morning then it will be the biggest upset in 33 years?

Not at all. We aren't beating Carolina. Just a fun "This Day in History."

I was there. When Bond muffed the snap on the 2yd line, at the end of the game, MSU fans sucked the air right out of the stadium. *GASP*

I was interested so I looked it up.

Other contenders for "Biggest Upset in SEC History"

2008 Ole Miss over Florida (Tim Tebow Cried Game)
1993 LSU over Alabama (ended 31 game win streak)

Do you mean 1983 for LSU over Bama?

1993. Alabama ended up forfeiting the entire year, but LSU won 17-14 in Tuscaloosa on Stallings' best team - cost them a back to back national title.

I lived in Alabama at the time. Many of wives were beat that day.

Last two minutes of the game
I had totally forgotten that Bama almost recovered a John Bond fumble in the endzone in the final seconds that would have won it.

In a personal note, on that same day I was attending Homecoming festivities at Troy State, where my sister was enrolled. The Trojans beat Tennessee Tech 52-3. Later that evening, I had some righteous sex with my sister's roommate, a former Junior Miss from Rhode Island, in the front passenger seat of my '62 VW convertible.

All in all, a good day.

I was 12 and I still remember listening to it on the radio.

Good thing because otherwise the SEC Champion for 1980 would have had a 42-14 loss to Southern Miss on their resume.

John Bond had a good career under center. Beat LSU all 4 years. He was the Moosiah.

1993 was not Stallings's best team. Far from it, and that game had little National championship implications. They lost 2 other games that year - Auburn and Florida.

Clearly.

Anyone who lost to Curley Hallman could say that.

I was reading it wrong. I thought you meant a 31 game streak against the Tigers. Not overall.

I was at that game in Tuscaloosa in '93, Bama had already been tied by Tennessee several weeks earlier, they were probably already out of the title hunt at that point. Still a huge upset

This kind of shite is why it sucks to be king for so long. You're always on the other side of "GREATEST UPSET EVAR" talk.

Just kidding. Rings >>>>>>>>> upsets
