If you'd rather not read an Alabama fans's perspective, then stop here.
During Alabama's "dynasty", they have set several standards that everyone in the country can admire.
Namely, they have set a defensive standard that's second to none.
Other highly talented programs like Auburn, Georgia, and Texas haven't fielded a good, yet alone great, defense in several years.
The 2009 Alabama defense was pretty darn good and helped lead the way to a 14-0 season that included dominating wins over 12-0 SEC East Champion Florida and undefeated, 13-0, Big 12 Champion Texas.
The 2010 Alabama defense only returned 2 starters from the previous year's elite unit; 2010 Alabama faced some serious competition and struggled with injuries and complacency. Yes, the unit was inconsistent and saved their best for the Capital one Bowl; however, they were pretty decent statistically.
2009 | 2010
Total Yards Allowed: 3435 | 3723
Yards/Play: 4.08 | 4.64
Rushing Yards Allowed: 1111 | 1432
Yards/Carry: 2.83 | 3.29
Rushing Touchdowns Allowed: 5 | 6
Passing Yards Allowed: 2324 | 2291
Yards/Attempt: 5.2 | 6.2
Passing Touchdowns Allowed: 11 | 12
Passes Intercepted: 24 | 22
You can notice a slight dropoff in areas but consider who Alabama was facing. Additionally, you must remember that the team dealt with injuries, complacency, and opponents coming off byes that were gunning to take down #1.
2013 Georgia and LSU do not have it as bad as 2010 Alabama, yet they are easily on pace to finish considerably worse than the 2010 Alabama defense statistically. From the Rant, it appears that most of us can agree that 2010 Alabama was better qualitatively. The season isn't finished yet, so while some averages may decrease, a few totals will continue to rise. Let's compare the 2013 defenses so far to the 2010 Alabama defense. Remember that Alabama's stats span 13 games, Georgia's span 7, and LSU's span 9.
2010 Alabama - 2013 Georgia - 2013 LSU
Total Yards Allowed: 3723 - 2731 - 3165
Yards/Play: 4.64 - 5.58 - 5.10
Rushing Yards Allowed: 1432 - 957 - 1336
Yards/Carry: 3.29 - 3.69 - 3.90
Rushing Touchdowns Allowed: 6 - 15 - 11
Passing Yards Allowed: 2291 - 1774 - 1829
Yards/Attempt: 6.2 - 7.7 - 6.6
Passing Touchdowns Allowed: 12 - 12 - 8
Interceptions: 22 - 3 - 6
Though I did not adjust the statistics, I posted the main ones for your convenience. This post is lengthy enough without going into detail about each stat I posted, but hopefully you will be able to see how much better the 2010 defense performed despite their problems.
So, what's the problem with 2013 Georgia and LSU?
Georgia hasn't fielded an elite defense in a long time. Todd Grantham and the defensive staff just aren't cutting it. I know Georgia has had issues with depth and recruiting in certain positions, but the position coaches should be able to coach the players up to a respectable level. Todd Grantham should be gone already. The 2012 Georgia defense's 1st team was loaded with star power and experience but couldn't stop the run and had multiple, ridiculous performances; all the blame shouldn't be placed on the players.
LSU? Chavis is an elite defensive coordinator, and I have observed that the LSU fanbase is still split over who's to blame for the dropoff in the defense. Well, from my 2010 Alabama example, it is clear that a significant exodus of NFL talent, leadership, and experience is not a good enough excuse for the product LSU has developed. Coaches and players will have to prove themselves next year.
I'm certain Georgia and LSU fans would take any of Alabama's defenses and defensive coaching staffs from 2008-2013; they'd done a much better job than Grantham & co. or Chief and co. have done this season.

This is why we want Grantham fired. Thanks, I guess.

What's the point of this? You did all that work and research for the bottom line of "alabama's defense has been better than UGA's and LSU's". So? We already know that.

You're not wrong at all but you're preaching to the choir. Georgia fans and college football fans at this point are likely not fooled. So what, water is wet.

The guys replacing the early departures aren't as talented, imo. The upside is we may actually have a lot of seniors playing over next two years.

You sure spent more time than needed on this. We all agree our D is bad and Grantham needs to be fired.

LSU lost like, 5 or 6 guys of the 2-deep on the D-line from last season, the linebackers haven't been as good as they were supposed to be, and although we had a lot of returning experience in the secondary, they haven't been playing like it.

Two things stand out about our DB's to me. 1)They don't seems as fast as times past and 2)due to lack of QB pressure they are having to cover longer than in times past.

somebody be bored
And, I'm sorry....this is by far one of the roughest one of Chavis's defenses have looked and if you don't think having 8 stud juniors leave your defense for the NFL isn't a good reason to have a drop off the next season...then you need your head examined. Bama has had #1 class after #1 class with the best defensive mind in college football coaching them. Not surprised if your 2010 D was maybe a "little" bit better than our 2013.

Dawgs defense sucks.
It happens when you lose 9 to the NFL.
Injuries have compounded the problem.
But we're seeing baby step improvement from week to week.
More pressure on the QB.
Better at stopping the run.
And getting better at creating turnovers.
We'll have to see if it continues through November.
I'm thinking it will.
(better running game that keeps the defense off the field helps defensive stats as well. UGA is getting the 2 best 3rd down threats back this weekend in Gurley and Bennett).

I don't quite see the point of comparing Alabama's D to GA or LSU, but whatever.
I think most rational UGA fans know that our defense sucks a big one and it wasn't much better last year with the stars on our roster. We expected more from Grantham, who was supposed to be this NFL guru that could vastly improve our defense. It hasn't happened yet. We could get someone for half the cost that could put the same product on the field.

Why you worried about LSU's defense, brah?

A couple subtle hooks but overall not worth the effort. Everyone knows 2010 Bama was a better team than the 2 you've mentioned.
