The next round of official Academic Progress Rate figures won’t be released for several more months, but Tennessee football coach Butch Jones didn’t want to wait that long to announce the good news the Vols recently received.
Jones announced following Tennessee’s practice Tuesday afternoon at Haslam Field that the Vols have been informed by the NCAA that they “finished the year at 962” in the APR, posting a perfect score of 1,000 for the spring semester, which will raise their multi-year APR above the minimum threshold necessary to avoid penalties.
Tennessee’s concerns regarding the APR have been “something that we’ve been dealing with for a long period of time,” Jones said, and have been “used against us” in recruiting.
The Vols posted a multi-year APR score of 924 for the 2008-09 through 2011-12 academic years, but the minimum score necessary to avoid penalties is set to increase from 900 to 930 beginning with the next round of APR scores.
“This is an issue since Day One when we walked in here as a coaching staff that our opponents have used against us in the recruitment process, and we were informed by the NCAA that we made that,” Jones said.
“There’s been a lot of hard work and a lot of effort by a lot of individuals behind the scenes that have made this come to fruition. I tell you what, I’m extremely proud. Our football team posted a perfect score of 1,000 this past spring, and with coaching turnover, that’s almost impossible to do.

And, again, there’s a lot of hard work that went into this, and it starts with our student-athletes. You look at the successful spring that we had, with 48 individuals above a 3.0. You look at a 2.82 cumulative GPA and a perfect score in the APR. That proves, again, that academics are the forefront of our football program, and it speaks volumes.

Jones said he’s “exceptionally proud” of the Vols’ perfect score in the APR for the spring 2013 semester.

Wow
Anyone care to speculate on what specifically this coaching staff is doing differently from the previous two to cause this?
I know part of the pro lame before was attrition but Jones should have had some of that as well

This coaching staff did not kick anybody out unless they were truly a cancer, so, less attrition.
Plus they know how to motivate.

Tennessee defensive lineman Daniel Hood said the academic program has changed drastically since Jones took over for Derek Dooley in December.
“The biggest difference is he has measurements on it. He’s not just been preaching do you academics, do your academics, but he’s also going to check up on you,” Hood said. “The system they have now, luckily I don’t have to worry about it because I’m in one class, but for the other guys, coach Jones said he personally goes out and checks class some days. It seemed like there was always an issue from when Dooley was here. The class checkers didn’t know who they were looking for.”

Guess I probably should've given the source if I'm going to quote it.
