Most OM fans acknowledge this year would likely be a 8 win or so team and 2014 was always going to be a great shot at competing for the SECCG. Our current team is more talented than its 2012 iteration, but injuries have kept us from our full potential. No matter, the process continues.

The SEC West is losing the top 3 QBs in AJ, JFF, and Mettsiah. All 3 schools do not have a proven QB replacement, and their fans are worried about the position next year. Auburn returns Nick Marshall, but he has passing limitations. MSU and Arky are not meant to be taken seriously at this point. Dr. Bro Wallace should be in consideration for 1st team preseason All SEC next year.

Our 2 East opponents (Vandy and Tennessee) are nowhere near the top of their division. Vandy will be breaking in a new QB (and maybe a new HC), and we get the Vols at home.

OLE MISS 2014 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Aug. 28 vs. Boise State (Atlanta)
Sept. 6 at Vanderbilt
Sept. 13 LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE
Sept. 20 OPEN
Sept. 27 MEMPHIS
Oct. 4 ALABAMA
Oct. 11 at Texas A&M
Oct. 18 TENNESSEE
Oct. 25 at LSU
Nov. 1 AUBURN
Nov. 8 PRESBYTERIAN
Nov. 15 OPEN
Nov. 22 at Arkansas
Nov. 29 MISSISSIPPI STATE

The toughest games on the schedule appear to be:

vs. Bama (new QB, defense losing HaHa and Moseley)
vs. Auburn
@ LSU (new QB)
@ TAMU (new QB, maybe Sumlin leaves?)
vs. Boise (Boise is still a challenge regardless of everyone jumping off the bandwagon)

Looking at our positions:

QB - Dr. Bro with Switchblade backing up. I like the Brunetti package this year and that will be missed, especially inside the 10 yard line.

RB - Jeff Scott is gone, but Walton has essentially replaced him with no drop-off. Mathers should be the 2nd option and will be called upon to grind out 2nd half yards. Dodson and Wilkins are wildcards, as is Akeem Judd (JUCO recruit). We don't need to recruit any more RBs this year unless it's a 5-star guy, IMO.

SLOT - This position could be Kailo's future, same with DK Buford. Vince Sanders can play here too. Korvic Neat is gone - he'll obviously be tough to replace.

WR - Moncrief's performance this year has been up-and-down, and it might just be enough to get him to return next year. Treadwell is obviously good. Vince will be back for his senior year. We lose Ja-Mes, but his role should be replaced by Quincy.

TE - Evan Engram played like a 5-star this year before the injury. Christian Morgan will likely be a run-blocking TE, we are probably going to sign 3 TEs this class.

OL - Probably the biggest question mark going into 2014. Tunsil, Morris, Bell, and Golson seem primed to start. We will miss Swindall @ C, he is rock solid. Christian Morris could be a wildcard, along with a JUCO OT we will probably need to sign. Rod Taylor can play inside right away based on his film. This is a position that still needs depth and talent, but it is getting better.

DE - Position should be solid with CJ, Wardo, RN, Bennett, Thompson, and adding Speaks. Still think we need a few more able bodies, especially speed-rusher types. The old adage is you can never have too many quality lineman. Shackelford (if he gets a waiver) is a wildcard, as is Tamario Strong.

DT - Hooks has be coming on as of late and I expect a good year next year. Gross is dependable as always. Hamilton has been injured this year and hasn't played to the preseason hype. Carlton Martin is serviceable but unspectacular. Need another body (JUCO maybe?) to go along with the true freshmen coming in.

LB - We lose Mike Marry, but Temario Strong might be the future of the Mike position. We will be good @ OLB with Bird and Denzel. Keith Lewis can play multiple spots. The position still needs more bodies (we almost ran out vs. LSU).

Husky - Tony Conner. The end.

S - Prewitt is good. Elston is bleh, but does bring some size/speed ratio to the field. Anthony Alford will also provide depth. Chief is solid but unspectacular. I want Jamal Adams very, very badly. CJ Hampton could probably start right away as well.

CB - We lose Sawyer, but he's been a journeyman type. Golson is our best pure CB. Hilton is a good tackler, and Derek Jones has shown flashes. Damnit Bobby Hill should provide some depth. Q Burdette and Carols Davis are role players.

This stretch is our season. We have to stay healthy and play well in this stretch to have a chance. Probably need to go 4-1 at worst to go to Atlanta.

Obviously Bama has reloaded in recruiting every year under Saban but I think next year will be the first time since 2007 where they will actually struggle against lesser opponents and drop some games they should win... Not being a homer or Bama hater... JMHO.

I don't think they've announced the LR schedule yet. I think they played there twice each year but IDK

I'll be ecstatic if we escape that stretch with only 2 losses. We're not winning the West next year.

That hasn't been released yet... The Hogs are under contract to play one OOC team and one SEC West team in War Memorial next season.

Probably so. However, the West next year could be kind of like the East this year. A 2-loss team could win the division, IMO. There's going to be a regression.

Most undervalued player we have on the team he always comes up with clutch plays!

Couldn't agree more. He is quietly having an all sec type year.

That's a really good schedule for next year, if Ole Miss can win some of the toss ups. Y'all's strength of schedule will be legit enough with conference games alone.

I saw y'all will be retuning probably 9-10 starters on offense (only losing 1 OL, which is clutch) and 7-8 on defense, depending on if anyone leaves early. That's a lot of returning starters for a team and one would have to believe that the experience will help a lot during the season.

Y'all beat Boise, Vandy, LA Laf, Memphis, Pres, Ark and Miss St easy, so that's 7 W's right out of the gate.

Then you have 5 games you may or may not be favored in, but they are all SEC games. Tenn at home is a good matchup, and I think you take that. So you have 8 wins with that.

After that it's your division toss ups with Bama, aTm, LSU and Aub. If y'all can win at least 2 of those, it will be a great season, anymore than that is cake and may end with a shot at the SECCG.

True, and Bama/Aub are both at home (we never play well in their stadiums)

Fadol Brown, the FIU transfer, is supposedly the real deal. Quality DT that won't even be included in this class.

Big Herb should add to the rotation at DT. O-Line depth is my biggest concern.

Forgot about him - he has potential as a rotation guy for sure.

Chuck said that Fadol is a DE and would be starting right now.

RN is a DT next year. He and Issac will start there for the next two years. Hooks and Woody will back them up followed by Carlton and Herb. I think Bennett will move to DE permanently. He has slimmed down to 270 and is doing very well there.

Our DE rotation will be CJ and Fadol, then Channing and Thompson, then Bennett and hopefully Pettway.

We will be destroying folks on the DL next year.
