No flame, UGA is probably my favorite team from the East. Yet it seems that year after year they continually underwhelm. I know, injuries, but it's not just this year. It seems that they never play with a sense of urgency and mimic the personality of their Zen-master coach. There's just not much natural fight in him. I do think he's a good person, but I couldn't help but notice a "well shucks" reaction to the Mizzou loss. It doesn't eat at him like many coaches. I can see that rubbing off on his players.

It got me to thinking back to that 2008 team. Preseason #1 and deservedly so. That team would be preseason #1 in just about any season. Amazing talent on both sides of the ball.

On offense:

Matthew Stafford
Knowshawn Moreno
AJ Green
Mohamed Massaquoi
Kris Durham
Clint Boling
Cordy Glenn

All starting in the league. fricking amazing firepower on offense. Unstoppable you would think, yet they never really looked it. On defense:

Geno Atkins
Justin Houston
Rennie Curran
Bacarri Rambo
Sanders Commings
Asher Allen
Reshad Jones
Brandon Boykin

Absolutely stacked. I believe you guys even had a bad arse kicker.

Playmakers at all levels on both sides of the ball. IIRC I believe yall had some injuries on the O-line (I know Sturdivant), but even still that is a pretty amazing collection of talent on one team.

Yet they got humiliated 3 times that year. The blackout game, a 49-10 loss to Florida, and a loss in a shootout to Georgia Tech.

It's frustrating to watch the Georgia program from an LSU fan's perspective (especially when we lose to you ). I often wonder what it would be like to be a Georgia fan. Knowing that Richt is a good, successful head coach, will always win a lot of games, but he's just never going to instill that extra something in his teams to make them great. Like an itch you can't scratch. Again, injuries, but it's another year where there's another great, senior quarterback going by the wayside for Georgia.

We're approaching a decade since Richt has won an SEC championship. I'm wondering if he'll ever get another one.

Because they weren't that good in 2007. Overrated going into 2008.

I remember their offensive line being really young and inconsistent. Also, they were mediocre defensively. Having great skill position players doesn't mean squat if you aren't strong in the trenches.

Well, they were 11-2 in 07 but lost the tie-breaker to Tennessee. Beat Hawaii to finish #3 in the country. Pretty damn good season.

But they certainly didn't live up to the hype the next season and then fell off a cliff the following.

Florida fan or not, that game was one of the most brutal face-rapings I've ever seen on network television. Jawja's third string was even destroying poor Hawai''''''''''''''''''''''''i.

Mark Richt lost control of the program.

He both recruited the OL poorly from a talent standpoint and failed to recruit enough. Our OL was below average because of the numbers, extreme youth, and injuries.

Our strength and conditioning coach was canned a year later because he had lost control.

We were in the middle of the Willie Martinez era

Oh, 2008. I attended all 3 losses and was a young man with high hopes coming into the year even after all the offseason garbage, but the injuries and low scholarship numbers did us in.

The Black Out was a jaw dropper. I don't think anybody expected that, not even the Bama fans. We at least made a modest second half run. It really illuminated the fact that our S&C program was absolute garbage. We went to a fricking funeral.

That didn't happen against UF. After storming the field in 2007, Urban Meyer had a point to prove to himself and to, well, himself: "That wasn't right. It was a bad deal. And it will forever be in the mind of Urban Meyer and in the mind of our football team. ... So we'll handle it. And it's going to be a big deal." Urban Meyer on Urban Meyer. And, sadly, they were talented enough to do it. Once again our S&C program was noticeably poor and we actually looked lethargic in our biggest game of the year. The team had finally tuned Richt out and was just talented enough on offense to skate by.

Until Georgia Tech. The only Tech loss of the Richt era and watermark of the CPJ era at Tech even with their ACC championship and Orange Bowl appearance. A freak game in the rain that literally looked over at half time when it was 28-12 and one TD was on a ridiculous pick 6 by Stafford. Willie looked like he had prepared well. HA, then the 2nd half happened. The cherry on top to cap off a miserable year. It very briefly turned the tables.

Hasn't UGA been dealing with this issue this year and last season as well?

Has Mark Richt lost control again?

Still not as talented as we'd like to be across the board, but certainly have depth, experience, and can more than hold our own at times. See: LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee. Not the worst defensive fronts. But we also wilt at times. See: Clemson, Mizzou

Arguably the top players at their position in the NFL, yet the defense is consistently a disaster. NFL factory, nothing more.

Our Oline took a lot of hits even before the season. But basically everything Menlo said is acurate.
