The current UGA defense has more problems than a math book, but I propose a few simple changes that might make us better. I also included a few observations.

1) Move JHC to SS full time. He's the best defensive player we have, but we're playing him out of position in the star/nickel role. He's at his best when he's coming downhill in run support and playing forward. It's hard for someone that long to turn and run with a slot receiver in coverage. He's not even blitzing hardly at all from the Star, so his greatest strengths are being taken away by our own scheme.

2) Move Swann back to the Star, where he was last year. He is struggling bad at the boundary. Might as well change things up by putting him back where he is comfortable. Let's give Dawson a chance at the boundary corner spot. Hell, he can't be any worse.

3) Speaking of Swann, he needs to quit being such a p****. Everybody talks about our freshmen DBs, but he's playing worse than any of them. At least Wiggins, Langley, Matthews and, Mauger play hard. If you're going to make mistakes, make them at full speed. I'm sick of seeing Swann lost and trailing the play at a jog. That, and celebrating a tackle made 20 yards downfield.

4) I don't know what happened to Jordan Jenkins, but we need him to be better. Maybe switch sides with him and Floyd every once in a while to keep their OTs off balance.

5) I appreciate that R. Wilson is one of our only players who makes tackles. I just wish they weren't mostly 6-8 yards downfield.

6) I would like to say that Ray Drew is playing his arse off and should be commended for it. The DL as a whole is our only consistent unit.

7) KISS. Keep it simple stupid. It's pretty clear that we aren't experienced enough to run a complex D well. Our only real strengths as a defense are our athleticism and speed. Let's keep the scheme simple and let our young guys play ball. We'll give up some yards, but we will make more plays if our guys are confident in their roles. Our only chance is to create more turnovers.

I'm convinced that if we simplified our playbook, our defense would be light years better. Every other snap half the defense is looking around confused not knowing what to do. It's even worse when there's as many as 4 TFr on the field at once. If we made it simple as hell and just let our football players go play football I think we'd be much better. But that won't happen I'm afraid.

8) Send Grantham packing to the nfl or whoever will have him.

I told you guys that my boy Ray would turn it on. Good for him.

Not likely.

The OC gets paid 6 figures to confuse the defense.
Even if you have 1 play from the sideline, the responsibilities and calls change with motions and formations.

Bingo. Also, our defense, being as young as it is, does not have many good blitzers. Part of confusing the offense is not mis-timing the snap count on every play and thus alerting the opposing QB that a blitz is coming. And on the occasions that they do this and are in fact faking a blitz, the LBs are much to slow dropping back into coverage.

Yeah.

Pass defense stinks. A lot of the TDs are on the DBs.
However, a lot of the first downs are on the linebackers.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was let go after this season to try and give Grantham one more shot at fixing things.

I wouldn't be so irritated with Grantham if he wasn't the second or whatever highest paid coordinator in the country. You pay someone like that, that leads people to believe you've really got something. Heck, even the one year we had a "good" defense under Grantham was 2011 and look at the schedule. We got hosed by Boise, SC, and Mich St., the only good offenses we actually played. Everyone else had just average offenses. 2012 was obviously a disappointment and then you have the clusterfrick that is 2013.

I'd settle for a decent corner. The guys playing now make Prince Miller and Bryan Evans look like Deion Sanders.

Idk, I guess I am on the side that think that it can't all be on the young talent and that by now a half way competent defensive staff has either A) gotten the defense to play their scheme better by now or B) realized what we planned schematically isn't going to work and make adjustments.

What had Georgia done? Continued to ram the shite out of the round peg into the square hole. If at first they don't succeed then they continue doing the same god damn thing and continue to not succeed. I agree with everyone when they say we have too complex a system. And the issues with the defense in miscommunications, confusion, and just generally always getting outclassed has been around for 2 defensive coordinators now...

If anyone was listening to 680 I was the guy that was just talking about how Grantham is going to see the youngster slowly gel with the vets. It wont happen overnight, but it will gradually.

And what vets are they going to gel with? The walk-on seniors and juniors who never play? Damian Swann, who, IMHO, has played his way down to the youngsters' level?

My point being we don't have that many vets and, at the end of the day, you can gel all you want, but you've still got to wrap up, find the ball, stay your gap, stay low, and every other important football fundamental.

As clay said i don't think the young kids are holding any of the vets back. The vets are playing just as bad as they are. And Grantham's defenses haven't just gotten soft over night.

Sure, I'd love to believe that somehow overnight Grantham figures out all the issues and presto, defense is at least serviceable. But with the mistakes being made, issues in communication, lining up, and generally bad form these are miscues that go back way more than last week. It's as much as what they are taught in the offseason as it is now. And we now have a body of work to see from Grantham.

And ya know what? There's very little that leads me to believe he has the competence to fix the problem tomorrow, before UF, or by 2014. If he couldn't field a fierce defense last year then I give him no chance in hell with a bunch of projects. And as of now he has done nothing to dissuade any of us.

Now, you may disagree and shite you may be right in some but one thing I do hope from this new poster is that while he remains optimistic he doesn't believe that those who question this program's leadership aren't on the same level of devotion. Because I am getting very, very tired of that rhetoric.

It has been rumored, even on talk radio that Swann has be battling a high ankle sprain. Do you know how hard those things are to shake? You ask questions like "why is he running slow", well that would be a good damn reason why he would be.

It takes TIME to gel, and build chemistry. Not hard to wrap your head around.

If in fact Swann is battling a HAS, i haven't heard about it. But say he is. Then it is Grantham's responsibility to put him in a situation where he can be successful with the injury or take him out.

I for one would advocate putting him at the Star, instead of field corner where he has to run a lot more, but he isn't as good a tackler as JHC.

I don't get the point of being hush hush about injuries. If he's injured, other teams will see it on tape or during the game. You can't hide it.

Even though he's injured he's still the best at his position. What would you have Grantham do exactly? Tell me that.....

It'd be one thing if he were able to make a play, but at this point, a less experienced guy like Sheldon Dawson or someone would seem like a better option than a guy who can barely run.

As far as poker goes, yes I have played it. In poker you can hide everything until it's time to show the cards. You can't hide Swann. If Vandy takes a deep shot with Jordan Matthews on the first play of the game Saturday, even if they don't connect, they'll know how healthy Swann is. Hand shown.
