Why don't more big recruits & underclassmen go to the CFL?

JFF and Clowney are worth so much money why didn't they go to the CFL and generate all that money up there where they could get a piece of it? I mean surely Arian Foster would not have had to dig in dumpsters for food in Canada like he did in Knoxville

because the free training and all the other free benefits of CFB have a greater benefit on the outcome[NFL] than the CFL.

If I'm not mistaken, CFL teams are allowed a certain number of "imports" on the roster at any given time.

I doubt that the CFL pays anywhere near what the NFL does. Gotta look long-term.

Just like with nearly every decision we make in life, these players believe the benefits of playing college football outweigh the benefits of playing in the CFL. Value of scholarship, value of degree, bigger crowds, more TV, better exposure to NFL, more celebrity, better weather, perhaps better coaching/training/facilities, etc are all factors that seem to be in favor of playing big time college football.

But JFF was worth $700 million to TAMU. If he had brought that into a CFL franchise he could have taken a piece

The reason being is because a CFL team can only have so many non-Canadians on their roster. Something like a US player takes the place of 3 Canadian players on the roster.
I asked about it since I am currently working in Toronto. This is from the website:
The current designated import rule requires three designated import players to only enter the game on special teams or to replace another import on offence or defence. This rule is specified in Article 23 of the CBA with the CFLPA as an amendment of the CFL By-laws and by Rule 4, Section 5, Article 6 of the Official CFL Rulebook.

He wouldn't be worth near that in the CFL

Do you really think this has much to do with it though? Are big HS recruits trying to get into the CFL but being turned down because of these roster limitations?

Well it is 1 of the reasons. Would a CFL team risk some of their roster spots for an unproven US High School player. If they could even go to begin with. I believe there may be age restrictions to get into the CFL also.

The CFL actually tried to expand and be a big boy years ago and it failed miserably. They know their nitche and stick to it.
A lot of CFL players have to still get other jobs in the offseason. It's Arena League type money, only you live in Canada so you are cold as hell and it all goes to taxes. The game is also quite a bit different with 3 downs and a wider field. A guy like JFF would kill it up there but many players would not. They also have the limited import rule and prefer to stick with players that are committed to being in the league as opposed to using it just to get to the NFL. The facilities are also less than what most of these kids are used to in college, especially the SEC.
I actually like the CFL. It's kind of a fun alternative and the weird rules are cool (like if you get a touchback you give up a point and there is no fair catch rule). With 3 downs it is also really hard to run down the clock.
Most of all though I think is just the cultural shock for most American players. It's a huge adjustment to playing up there from what they are used to.

The CFL doesn't want just out of high school kids on their rosters. Why would they? They have guys that are much more developed and a lot more talented that played in college but just weren't good enough to make it in the NFL. No high school kid is going to compete with that.
