Is there a more savvy way of purchasing vehicles these days in this new fangled internet age? I just broke 100k on my Ram and am probably gonna get into something new (2010-2012) in the next month or two
I dont need financing and probably looking at something in the $20k range. Is private party/craigslist the best way to go?
I know carmax and some other places have bottom line no haggle pricing and you can get some decent warranties and shite with it. Havent bought a new truck in a while and not up to speed on car buying options these days. Is ebay motors worth messing with?
Not so sure about the whole car auctions process

My truck is paid off, and I will not trade it in.
When I get a new ride, I will keep my Tundra

If you're not looking for the best possible deal, then sure, go to Carmax. If you want to pay bottom dollar, skip it.
I've bought a car off ebay also, and it was a great vehicle.

Did this once. One of the best vehicles we ever owned.

Ok. So ebay motors is a solid option?
Is it a pretty straight forward process? Any tips on how it works and how to get the best deal, besides the obvious I guess

Carmax charges a premium for their little "no haggle" deal. Also, what they have is what they have unless you get one drop shipped from somewhere else.
Use cars.com to figure out what the going/good price is for what you're looking for. Then search within how far you're willing to go to find your car at a good deal. Call them up and say...I'll give you $x for this car and see what they do. If your trading it makes it a little tougher but you can figure out what your cars worth and build it in to the deal...I.e. I'll give you $x plus this POS for that.
Best thing the internet does is tell you exactly want the market rate is for what you want so its easier to spot deals. Also, you'll see which dealers have a good stock of what you're looking for. The guy with 15 trucks will deal better than the guy with 1. I've done this with my last two cars and it worked out pretty well.
I like dealers rather than private sellers because you never know what the frick you're getting into. If you're paying cash my guess is you don't want to deal with that kind of shite either.

How the hell can you buy a car from eBay? If you're not buying new you have to lay eyes on a vehicle to see if its been taken care or or beat to shite. Seems lime that would be a pain in the arse with one off deals on eBay.
Course I'm an old fart too....

Very much so. We bought from a dealer in Miami (this was in 2003, so it's gotten easier to research sellers now) and had the car shipped to our door. Had no issues, was everything we expected.
Nowadays, you can choose to only view vehicles within a certain vicinity of your zip code, so you don't have to go the sight unseen route if you prefer. Many local dealers list on there now and usually, they offer a better deal on eBay than on their own website. Individuals list, too.
Be sure to research the seller, read all the fine print and know that if their rating is 99.5%, that's actually kinda bad. Read the reviews for all sellers THOROUGHLY. Get on the phone with them and ask all the same questions you would normally. There are many auto sellers on eBay who have a perfect 100% score.
These folks are one of them. Been around for a long time now and having sold over 5,000 vehicles with a PERFECT score, I'd have no issues buying from them. There are others like this. You just have to look. Best thing is to determine what you want and then begin searching for it specifically.
And don't assume because they have a particular price listed that it isn't negotiable. Even if it's the deal of the century, it never hurts to go through the motions and ask.
Good luck!

For you "old farts", you can simply stay with a local search and go see it. eBay is just a tool. Almost ALL dealers with any reputation (good or bad) now have a presence on eBay.

What I did a couple months ago, when I purchased my vehicle from CarMax, is I went onto their website and searched the specific vehicle I wanted.
They'll show ALL of the same type (i.e. Porsche Carerra) in the U.S. but any and all of them can be transferred to a nearby CarMax. Most of the far away CarMaxes have a transfer fee upwards to $700 but if they are nearby (i.e. Charlotte) it is a free transfer.
I was in Georgia when I purchased my vehicle at the Norcross CarMax. It was transferred from Charlotte at zero cost. It arrived within a week of the transfer request.
I bought the vehicle a week later when they got the inspection taken care of.
Piece of cake.
30 day warranty, but they do push an extended 150,000 mile warranty that they offer

Search on cars.com or autotrader.com. You can set the milage/distance from your house as part of the search parameters. You can also look from "For Sale by Owner" as well, which often times gives you the lowest prices, which you can still lower further by negotiating.
I saw a silly deal on an 2012 Escalde ESV in Salt Lake a few months ago. It would've been worth it to even pay the guy to get it checked out at a Midas upfront, and then if it checked out fly out there to pick it up. I would've still come out $18K ahead in value.
