From tonight:

@_DCReeves: Saban said he plans to get Grant Hill time, whether they are up 40 or down 40 "Because he deserves to play."

@UAConfidential: Saban hinted that if Grant Hill plays well he may be starting soon and also hinted more true freshman may be playing this week

FWIW Grant Hill was practicing at RT this week after practicing at LT for most of the season

Update on Brandon Hill:

@CecilHurt: Weighty news: Saban says freshman OL Brandon Hill is down from 420 to 365. "When he gets to 340, he'll be a pretty good player."

More info:

quote:

"I don't care if we're getting beat by 40 or winning by 40, it doesn't matter," Saban said on his weekly radio show appearance. "We're going to play him because he deserves to play. He may be one of our five best players. If he is, we need to find a spot for him."

Hill was not on the sidelines for last week's game against Ole Miss because of a stomach virus but he was back at practice Tuesday. With center Ryan Kelly out for the next few weeks with a knee injury and junior Chad Lindsay serving as his replacement, Saban said right guard Anthony Steen is also capable of playing center.

"If there's a guard that's coming along that's a really good player, I'm not a guy that's going to sit here with a bad hand ... if we can make improvements on our team," Saban said.

Not sure how to interpret that last quote. Is he saying he might move Steen to C and play Hill at RG?

So Hill must be over the flu. Hill can play heavier thanks to his impressive footwork. Will be good to see what he's got in live action.

My first guess is that they just rest Steen. Would be great if this was a way to work Arie Kouandjio out of the starting lineup. He's way over his head. Hill is a smart too so once he gets some experience And coaching he's not coming off the field with his talent. Most likely a year away tho.

to Grant Hill seeing the field soon. He was one of my favorite recruits this past cycle. I wonder who has been put on notice...

I don't know if this has been said on here but I thought Alphonse Taylor looked pretty good at guard last week. Maybe they get him and HIll more work at guard this week.

I remember Taylor getting some good reports this fall too.

Part of me wonders if some of these young players would be a positive shake-up to the OL the way Lindsay was, but part of me is apprehensive about full scale changes to the OL midway through the season.

Yeah, makes me nervous too. Now is the time if they are gonna do it, though.

Good point. We have 4 games before LSU, so if you are going to experiment, Now is the time. But you are right, Lindsey and Steen need game reps together with T.J. Running right up their backs.

Hill will eventually be an animal at Guard, but if he is showing enough to start now (at 6'6 365 lbs) then our inside running game will benefit tremendously. I certainly wouldn't challenge his big arse.

I mean Brandon, not Grant.

Grant will end up at Tackle. Kudos to Cap for calling that last year.

Of course I'm feeling apprehensive about the changes, but at what point are we going to stop using something that isn't working. Our oline should be figured out by now, I agree. But if the backups are more talented/hungry than some of the starters, why not? It's clear that thus far the oline has been an overall weakness of our team and has limited our success on offense a great deal.

I'm glad that we practically have a bye month to figure this out

I know I was really concerned about our O-line for next season at the start of this season due to Steen and possibly Cyrus leaving, but it appears that Cyrus will stay given his shaky play. Given the studs we have waiting in the wings in both of the Hill boys and Big Cam coming in, we may actually be better next year.

With a game manager at QB, a la McElroy, we may not fall as far as we're projected to.
