Rick Cleveland is tweeting that Dan died at age 53. Cardiac surgeon in Jackson. He was one of my favorite players. RIP Dan

Shocking news for any State fan over 45 y/o. Dan was my med school roommate, and I'm proud to have called him my friend. Smart, unbelievably athletic, and great guy overall. We would watch CWS videos before exams to get us amped in order to stay up longer during study breaks. We loved watching him take Roger Clemens yard against Texas as the lead off batter in the first inning. He was truly a renaissance man..would calf rope in the rodeo that came to Jackson, collected antiques, and meticulously cut the grass at his house like the Dudy Noble outfield. Man's man that loved State and represented it well..he will be dearly missed

Then you and I have walked the same halls together at times. Did you do your residency there too? I knew a Bill Wallace, the surgeon but he would be a good bit older than you I think.

That name rings a bell but didn't know him. I'm 47 but Dan was in my class due to his minor league ball..graduated in 93 and finished IM res in 96

quote:I am sure I would know you. I forgot Dan was so late getting started. So if he finished med school in 93, 6 years surgery residency, 2 or 3 year cardio-thoracic fellowship means he has only been in private practice for 11 or 12 years? That's a tough deal.

Very tough deal..been on the phone with guys in our class who practice in Jackson and we all agreed that Dan had finally landed his dream job by simply being back in Jackson..life is short and unpredictable, really sux but Dan was a gamer and a proud Dawg and I'll remember him for his warmth and competitive nature among so many other positives..
