There are two that stand heads above the crowd when it comes to riding the UGA gravytrain. Have to admit that just as Vince Dooley was about to lap the field here comes Loran with this piece of selfserving drivel.

Munson was sitting high on the 50 yard line watching the game. But I would have loved to hear him call that game.

"Loran whadddddddddddddddddaya got?"
"Well Larry I just wanted to tell you and the Georgia listeners that the grass on the field is very green today."
Loran, while sometimes unorthodox in his style is part of the tradition that is UGA. I like the letter to Larry. Munson would have loved that ballgame and I would have loved to hear him call it.

Best Loran / Larry exchange ever:
Larry: "WhaddyaGotLoran?"
Loran: "Well, I'm on the sidelines here with Charles Grant. Charles, you're from South Georgia. You like Boiled Peanuts don't you?"
Charles: "Yeah."
Loran: "Well, back to you Larry."
Larry: (Pause) "Third and Six...."

another.....
Larry: "WhaddyaGotLoran?"
Loran: 'Well, Larry, we have an update on Decory Bryant, who left the game with a neck injury. He has been taken to St. Mary's Hospital and been diagnosed with a broken neck, although he is in stable condition."
Larry: "That's a tough break."
Loran: "Yes, it is. It appears unlikely he'll return to the field in this game."

I always loved Loran explaining how the tension could be cut with a knife

I don't remember the details but in the late 90's I remember Donnan getting pissed at Loran during a presser and every fan was thinking "you better learn to live with him or leave". He's part of the UGA tradition. Great article!

well frick me, that is the best tradition at UGA....most UGA Alumni, fans and supporters are all of those because Mama and Daddy...I know I wouldn't be a Dawg were it not for listening to Munson call the games with my father.
If you aren't a fan of Larry Munson and Loran Smith you ain't a DAWG.. You may be a supporter of UGA but you ain't a DAWG....

I am thinking this was after the Texas Tech game (remember THE DRIVE???) and Loran Asked Donnan about the teams overall performance on the field which pretty much sucked and Donnan told him to just enjoy the win and not be so critical. Something to that effect. This incident, although definitely taken out of context as both Donnan and Smith have said repeatedly, did alienate Donnan with the fan base and more importantly DONORS who understand what Loran Smith means to UGA (and Athens) and are not going to put up with anyone belittling one of the best friends the University has ever had.

Yep, my Dad is class of '61 so it was pretty much expected that I'd love UGA.
