I can give you a hundred links of players that were injured not playing special teams.

I'm sure you can, and players certainly can get injured playing regular offense or defense. But ask any USC or Oregon fan today what they think about putting the team's star player back to return kicks.

Yep. Being hurt on a punt return is no more likely than being hurt on any other play. You should always use your best players on ST, just like offense or defense.
I have been happy with Christion in the PR/KR department so far this year though. He is making better decisions than he did last year and he has given us a couple of nice returns. Can't ask for much more than that.

No, thanks, I'm smarter than they are.
You guys didn't have a problem with Javy being back there. Would you rather have a starting DB go out, or a WR? And Javy made a bigger impact on punt returns than just about any WR has ever made for Bama. So, you'd rather play it safe, give up a ton of field position on every offensive possession, than take the chance of a WR maybe getting hurt?
I'd like to point out that we have a ton of starters playing on special teams anyway.

I bet RGIII would make one hell of a punt returner. Shanahan is an idiot.

Are you saying a WR is as important as your starting QB?

No, I'm saying the importance of a player to your O or D is a factor in whether or not to use him as a return man

Like Julio Jones? Or Arenas on defense?

Return game is fine.
Don't you have a helicopter to mod?
I agree it's "fine". But it could be better.

Julio was situational, and I think a healthy Amari would be used in a similar fashion. Teams are concerned about Christion but seeing a guy like Julio or Amari back there is downright scary for the opposition.
Javy was the best of both worlds - durable enough to handle the role full-time and scary AF with the ball in his hands...

Nice post. And not only do I completely agree but so does Saban. I remember how mad it use to make people to see Julio and Trent return kicks.

Remember why Julio wasn't in the game on the final drive of the 2010 Iron Bowl? And as for Saban, I think he agrees with me since I've never seen Cooper back to return a kick or punt.
Look, I'm not saying there's no situation where I'd have one of my premiere players back there. Lot of different factors go into the decision. But if I have someone else who can do the job, I'd be very reluctant to put an Amari Cooper or Marqise Lee type talent back there.

We'll just agree to disagree.
I want my best players where they can make the biggest impact. Otherwise, what are you saving them for? Punt return is one of those places where a great player can really make a difference in games.

To be honest, the best return man on our team both last year and this year is probably Deion Belue.

I'm fine with the return game but to further Teague's point, David Palmer returned punts and kicks. I can't think of a more valuable guy to the teams he played on.

LoL at people who think running is the only part of making a good punt returner. herp derp.
