Anybody been to this before?
I have an opportunity to go and am wondering if it is worth the 6.5 hour drive for me. I love German beer and food by the way.

Yep, though it's been over 10 years. It's not worth a 6 hour drive, IMO. The day we went, every place was packed, and they were pretty strict about not letting you walk around with beer. Lots of amateur hour drinking. It may have been the day we went though, as it was a picture perfect fall afternoon.
If you combined it with some other stuff, I guess it's okay to check out for a few hours. I wouldn't go solely for it though.

I'll echo what Spleen said. It isn't THAT interesting. You'll have a good time, but don't expect it to be amazing.

We always go camping at the upper Chattahoochee national park then come down smelling like shite on Sunday and hit the bars. Fun time, but nothing too crazy. Lot of bikers.

I'm 23. Would be staying the weekend. I would be going with family friends, so not looking for the wildest weekend of my life.

You get out of it, what you put in it, so you dont have to have a huge party, but like I said above, your age group would fit in nicely. not sure it would be worth the drive, but if you dont have anything else to do

If you're going for the weekend then you'll have a good time. Rent a cabin in the area, head to Helen for the afternoon and take it in.

Here is the down low on Oktoberfest in Helen. We have an annual trip that we have been taking for the last 10 years or so but we quit going two years ago. Helen has clamped down and actually tried to choke out the visitors the last couple years.
The bars are still fun but they all close around midnight-ish, the fest hall is a good time for one night and the bakery has some pretty amazing breakfast. If you take your party with you, you will have a good time but don't expect to find a huge party there anymore.
