Seems like this deal may involve an agent paying players. How does a University monitor what a player does with an agent? Serious question, what can they do besides tell them what they are not suppose to do. If it happens how does that come back on the University if a booster was not involved, even if they were playing at the time of the money exchanging hands?

Only becomes an issue is if the school knew that the player was taking money and they played him anyways.

Well keeping tabs on their bank accounts and where they are flying to, might help.

If I were a coach, I'd demand a clone of every players cell phone and all their passwords

Have kids report all bank accounts they have and document all deposits.

Not a whole lot the university can do, but unfortunately the university will pay the price.

one problem may be that the money man was a former bama player.

does it matter? I honestly don't know

what I'm asking is, if a player is found to have received benefits while playing in college, does it matter if the university knew about it?

i don't know

Not really, if they played an inelligible player, knowing or not, they can get in trouble.

Eta, more so vacating games though, maybe a tack on of failure to monitor.

Difference is there was a USC assistant who knew about the payments and decided not to tell anyone. If no one at Alabama knew this was going on, how do you stop things like this from occurring? Saban educates these players, literally beats their heads with a stick trying to teach them not to associate themselves with agents until they are eligible to declare.

There's only so much you can do.

I guess this is the next thing to prevent this stuff from happening. I see no other way around it...

I guess it all depends on how the NCAA wants to push it. They made UMass vacate their Final Four when Camby accepted something like $40,000 from an agent. Cal was never implicated himself and the school denied knowing about it but they were still made to vacate it.

Problem is, like with what supposedly happened with fluker, what keeps them from opening up more accounts.

This.

There is nothing stopping athletes from opening up different bank accounts to smuggle money past the eyes of their university's compliance department.

They sat Andre against Utah for this. I'm not sure if he took money though. I'd like to believe if they knew Fluke was talking to an agent and getting paid they'd have no issues sitting his arse down. With all these awesome offensive linemen we HA behind him we wouldn't miss a beat.
