Love him, or Hate him one must respect his accomplishments. He was truly an iconic figure and college football legend. A man so beloved by his school and their fans that they lined the sides and overpasses of the interstate from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham on the day of his funeral. to you Coach Bryant, Happy Birthday.

Former US Senator Fred Thompson (TN) on the floor in Washington addressing future terrorist concerns--
In just a little while we were about to witness a grievous cowardly act. Here's to America on this day.

6. Bryant secretly married college sweetheart Mary Harmon Black in 1935. Frank Thomas didn't want his players to be married, and Bryant feared the loss of his scholarship.
7. Bryant played Tennessee in 1935 with a broken bone in his leg. Atlanta Constitution sports editor Ralph McGill was skeptical of the story, drove to Tuscaloosa and demanded to see the X-rays. He apologized to Bryant, who told the editor, "It was just one little bone." Georgia fans cheered Bryant's toughness before the next game.
10. While at the Rose Bowl with Alabama's team in 1937, Bryant got a screen test with Paramount Studios to become an actor. He was offered a contract, but his wife wouldn't move to California.
16. Bryant's quarterback on the flight school team: Otto Graham, the Northwestern star who would win more championships than any quarterback in pro football history.
20. The Wildcats won their first SEC title in 1950 under Bryant, who then beat Oklahoma at the Sugar Bowl to end the Sooners' 31-game winning streak. "If you give us the bid," Bryant said, "I will guarantee you we will beat Oklahoma's arse."

I've always wondered is Bear was coaching today, what style of football would his team play. Would he go pro style or would he go spread? In his time he was very innovative..one of the reasons he was so successful.

Just curious, how many of you Bama posters were alive or even old enough to remember Bear Bryant and his teams?

Great coach and darn good person, too. Did a lot of "small stuff" for folks that didn't always make news.

The only mark on his career is wondering how great his teams could have been had he been allowed to recruit African American players for his whole career. Segregation probably cost him a handful of national championships.

I am. Met him a few times as a small kid. My grandmother and Mrs. Bryant were in the same social circle and I met her several times. I was scared to death of him every time I was around him.

I love Namath's comment about Bear's open door policy, "none of us were stupid enough to go in." Or was that Stabler?
