LSU does that for most bigger home games.
Its to keep students from selling their $20 for 10x the face value. They want the money to go to the university and the donors not the students.

they do this for games with high demand. basically they want every student who wants a ticket to get one first so they don't allow you to pull a guest ticket with your ticket. I think you can convert them after the regular ticket pull is complete if there are any left (not sure about that though)

The main reason is that student tickets are subsidized by Alum/Donors etc. so they pay something like 250-300 for all sports pass. And if they converted all their tickets, then they could theoretically profit off them. Obviously we are not subsidizing student tickets so that they can make money.

At LSU I'm pretty sure we can only do student guest tickets for non conference games

Also means they can't bring their bf/gf/friend/family member though. That sucks and id complain like a motherfricker if I wasn't able to take my gf to the biggest game of the year.

OM's student tickets are on our student IDs, so you can't do this anyway.
