How does one grow up in Mississippi and become a State fan as opposed to OM?

Let's assume you are in HS or some shite. What would drive a Mississippian to become a cow bell ringer as opposed to a rebel?
I have a buddy who is a die hard Moo State fan. His reasoning is that his great great grandad (or something-idk-it was very far down the line though) had played football at State.
I'm curious.

Geography/parents/what you want to major in.

seriously though
Not to jab at Miss State or anything but they're pretty meh as far as athletics goes.
I get how someone could do it with Auburn over Bama because Auburn has had their day.

Parents going to state is about the only thing... But to be honest, ole miss is about as parent/accepted affiliated as state.
Lots of LSU and bama fans from Mississippi.

I get the whole parents and major thing. But there are many more UT fans in Nashville than Vandy fans. The geography thing doesn't make as much sense to me.

Honestly there's a lot of poor people in MS, and OM is a turn off for them.
And like the above poster said, contrarians.

Well, both parents, and all my aunts and uncles graduated from MSU. My parents were even married in the Chapel of Memories on campus. I was born to be a state fan.

What's the better school? If I'm not mistaken state has a better engineering program and ole miss has the better?
Serious question as I don't know, that's not a jab.

It seems like the northern part of the state/Memphis is more Ole Miss while central to south MS is more likely to be MSU.

So a lot of the poor people of MS think OM is a bunch of rich kids?
I mean, I guess that's fair.

Maybe you don't want to be around a bunch of pretentious Old South wannabees?

Yes.
All the rural areas are heavily pro MSU

I get that. OM definitely has that reputation.
