I think the 1992 defense is the greatest in college football history and the 2011 version might be second.

No, based on the times 1961 was the best. Look at the stats.
I think the article means based on other teams at the times.

The 1961 team had six shutouts and never allowed more than 7 in a game. They were legit.

Yep. I was a first grader and that year really started my obsession, although I was a fan born.

I think the article means based on the competition at the time.
I think it is pretty obvious that players are bigger, faster, etc now. No one at the time could have even considered beating 61 Bama.

1980 was fortunate enough to win a title, but 2002, 2007, and 2012 were all better all-around teams.

There was a white football player epidemic in 1961 for everyone

Seriously?

You're trying to tell me that the BEST teams from the SEC, sans AU and UF are all 1984 and before?

I mean, with the run the conference has had this decade, the best we can come up with for LSU is '58 because they won a championship? Hell, I'd argue the '11 team that lost to Bama in the MNC was better than the '58 team, and certainly the '07 team that won it.

USC's best year was '84, and not one from the last 5 years or so?

TAMU's best was in 19fricking39? Lemme guess, just because they won a MNC that year?

And Bama... '61? No doubt it was a great team, but do you not think that '09 Bama would not crush '61 Bama?
