I work at a boat dealership on commission when I'm not in school. I recently had a couple come in to look at a wakeboard boat. Myself and the other salesman (70 year old guy not on commission) both went to talk to them. My colleague introduced himself first and I did right after. After the couple bagan showing interest in the wakeboard boat products (something I am much better at selling since that's why I was hired) the older salesman went back to his office.

I finish talking to them about an hour later and have a demo setup on a weekend coming up, I go to ask him for a lead sheet to take their info and he is being a complete arse and saying I took his customer.

Is this unreasonable? I mean he's not on commission so why should he be mad? I only get paid when I sell something (I get minimum hourly) but my real pay is commissions. I just think he's being a baby. What say y'all?

I know tl;dr

if you both walked up at the same time he is probably just having a bad day or week.

Maybe he's getting shite from management about not selling enough.

Honestly, I think whichever salesman introduces himself first has dibs.

frick him. He should be retired anyways. Nothing wrong with you giving him a helping nudge in that direction.

He's the father of the GM so I doubt he's getting fired. He gets nothing when he sells something except his name on the deal sheet. He's on salary not commission so selling or not selling isn't exactly killing his pay

I did the commissioned sales thing for a while.

If the old timer wasn't able to sell the product or didn't have the right knowledge to make progress towards the sale he should probably have bowed out and turned it to you, which it seems like he did.

Now that it's a live lead with a demo he wants to be back on the deal. Commissioned sales is one of the few jobs left where you don't get paid for getting out of bed and showing up, unless you suck and take the salary. I'm guessing he was once a commissioned guy that got lazy or too old to hustle, he should know what's up.

That being said, any sales guy (commissioned or otherwise) that wouldn't at least take a shot at getting half the young guy's deal without doing any of the work isn't worth a damn either.

He took a shot, he's probably just trying to see if you'll back down and give him some easy money.

I mean I wouldn't care to give him some of the commission, but he literally said 5 words to them.

What pissed me off was me coming back in to get a lead sheet (he has them in his desk) and him being a dick and saying no, you took my customer.

The dude has no clue about selling wakeboard boats anyway, I've been selling them for about 4 years now and have extensive knowledge. He just looks at the price sheet and reads the price to people who want one.

If I'm not commissioned and get paid just to show up, there's no way I want all the paperwork. Have at it.

He's phoning it in while you're out there working and actually making a sale. The guy is an idiot and a dick. He doesn't need his name on the lead sheet because he hasn't earned it. This guy represents the everything I hate about corporate america. Just because you're on the payroll doesn't mean you've earned one dime.

That's a good point, I made the assumption he got a bonus per unit or something similar to that. If he gets paid the same, he's just trying to get the mark on the board to look good at your expense. Screw that guy.

At this point all bets are off and it's your deal IMO. If he wanted to be the one to work the sale then he shouldn't have went back to his office. At least that's how I look at it.

Guy wanted you to do the pitch and legwork and now wants a cut.

This is the way I always thought things work, but it does make it somewhat more understandable when the first guy isn't on commission and the second one is

So if he makes the sale, where does the cut you would have gotten go? Just back into the business or does his son/GM get a bigger cut? Maybe that's why he's pissed.
