247 4* ILB, Amonte Caban has SC in his Final 3, he surprisingly eliminated Miss St.

quote:

LB Amonte Caban of Smiths Station, AL said earlier this week he might have his decision made by Wednesday. Well, Wednesday has come and gone and Caban has not made his decision.

"I have a lot of great opportunities and options in front of me," Caban said. "I want to be sure that I am deciding on the best fit for me both athletically and academically. The plan is to be in a better position to make a decision by tomorrow (Thursday) but my verbal may not come until next week."

Caban said his mother wanted to talk to all of his recruiters one final time and she has done that. The conversations included USC linebackers coach and recruiter Kirk Botkin.

"It went very well, she loves him," Caban said. "I like it up there and she is going up there soon and I believe she will like it."

Caban said his decision is down to USC, Tennessee and Louisville eliminating Mississippi State and Kentucky from his list.

Per 247, SC is very interested, but we are trying to get him to hold off on making a decision as we wanted to see if a new WR was going to emerge into our '15 recruiting picture.

Monday Caban committed to Louisville. Don't know if this was due to our asking him to hold off on his commitment, or even telling him we're done at LB, or what. As recently as Sunday (day before his commitment) 11 of 12 crystal ball predictions had him to USC, with 2 new ones coming last weekend. So this seems to have surprised everyone.

Also don't know if he's still coming to Columbia for the UGA game as was previously expected but I would be surprised if he did....

Caban was a great player, we just filled up at LB too soon. If he would've jumped on before Henry or Durant, they would've taken his commitment, but it is what it is. Good luck to him, maybe something will happen and we could get him at SC, that'd be good.

Meh, 1 game doesn't impact those guys that much, they're really just looking at the environment.

Otherwise, the year we stomped uga into the ground, we would've got a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits from that game. That game was loaded with visitor talent.

Let's hope this game has more of an impact with the recruits than I thought it would.

Here's a link to a thread I started on the recruiting board. Some of the recruits feedback is on there.

Definitely lot's of good feedback from the recruits. I'm just glad Dylan's INT wasn't the death knell. It easily could have been.

Never throw over the middle late.

Most of the 2015 guys know where they're going already. I think this game was more important for locking down our current class since it's so OOS heavy. No way you don't want to stay committed after watching that game in the stadium w/ the fan support.

That's a good point, also, that '16 list of visitors was pretty stacked, it should help us get some return visits from them in the spring/summer and hopefully an OV next year.

247 said 4* LB Roquan Smith may not be a take b/c LB is full this class.

HOWEVER, he's putting out a different vibe in the media and saying the coaches are telling him something different.

https://www.goupstate.com/article/20140915/PSPORTS02/140919745/-1/PSPORTS

quote:

LB Roquan Smith of Montezuma, GA made an unofficial visit to USC Saturday for the Georgia game and now plans to take an official visit to Columbia later this season. Smith met with coaches Steve Spurrier and Lorenzo Ward and he has a lot of interest in the Gamecocks calling his visit to USC "tremendous."

"They showed me that I am a priority," Smith said. "Coach Ward told me they he loves play makers in his defense and that I could be that play maker. They like me at the Spur position and I'd like to play (at that position). Coach Spurrier just told me they would love to have me at Carolina."

The scene at Williams-Brice Stadium impressed Smith.

"It was an incredible atmosphere," he said. 'I can't wait to get back down there and check the place out again."

Smith does not plan to begin narrowing his list until the season ends. He named Georgia, Ole Miss and Florida as other schools he plans to visit this season. As for other official visits, he did not name any.

He does not have any favorites saying, "I'm still pretty wide open."

Update on '14 signee Darin Smalls, now a possible CB for the '15 class and EE.

https://www.goupstate.com/article/20140915/PSPORTS02/140919734/-1/PSPORTS

quote:

DB Darin Smalls, a 2014 USC signee from Summerville who could not enroll in August because the ACT people flagged his last score, will need to retake and pass the test again, to be able to enroll in January. Smalls said Monday he was recently informed him that his qualifying score was invalid.

"I took it at another school with about 20 other kids," Smalls said. "I'm not sure why it was flagged. Either my answers or someone else's were close. A proctor was there." Smalls said his score did improve a lot from the previous test but he credits that to the preparation he put into the test.

Smalls is waiting to hear back from the ACT regarding the proctors for his next test. Once he gets that letter, he will set the date for what will be his fifth test. He is also taking an on-line class in which he says if he makes an 'A', that, too, will aid him in qualifying. But, if he gets a qualifying test score, he said he can drop the on-line class.

Smalls tore his ACL and LCL in the third game of last season and has been rehabbing ever since. "I'm just starting to get back to the gym," he said. "They knee is better, making a lot of progress. I can run, jump and cut." But he hasn't had contact on the knee.

Smalls has kept in contact with the Gamecocks and has been in for all three home games. "Everything is good with USC," he said. "I thought it was an outstanding game (vs Georgia). The defense stepped up. I was impressed with Al Harris Jr. He held his ground."

Once he arrives at USC, Smalls expects to be throw right into the mix at corner.

Renewed interest in SC WR, currently committed to Stanford.

https://www.goupstate.com/article/20140916/PSPORTS02/140919683/-1/PSPORTS

quote:

Stanford commit WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside of Dorman is hearing from USC once again. Though he says his commitment to the Cardinal is strong, Arcega-Whiteside is talking to the Gamecocks.

"They lost one of their commitments at wide receiver and we're talking," he said. "They want me to come down for a game."

Arcega-Whiteside is unsure of the visit, however. "I really don't know yet," he said. "I need to talk to my parents about it. Right now, I'm just focusing on my season."

Dorman is a traditional Clemson pipeline iirc.

Would be nice to get a foothold in there.

Hey guys, first off I just wanted to say great game a couple of weeks ago. You guys were the better team. But I just wanted to give you guys an update on yalls commit Mon Denson. He went absolutely off today with 3 touchdowns including 61 yarder. He's been a work horse all season for LaGrange just like he was as a freshman and sophomore when I played with him. Yall are really getting a gem. His speed and power combination is unreal not to mention he's playing in 5a in the state of Georgia. But just wanted to update yall. I'm jealous
