Bill Battle is only a few months into his tenure as the University of Alabama's athletics director, but he quickly discovered that running an athletic department isn't exactly running a business.

Battle studied UA's athletic budget and realized collegiate athletics has an unbalanced ledger.

"This is an interesting business if you can call it a business, which I guess it is," said Battle, 71, who was hired in March to replace the late Mal Moore, who was at the time hospitalized with a pulmonary condition. "It's like running a company that has 21 divisions and two of them are profitable."

That PDF is interesting.

What the hell is up with rowing? A lot of revenue and expense.

Most of the teams they compete with are in the northeast. A lot of travel. As for income, I'm not sure how they're making that much.

Looking at the pdf, I think a men's soccer team would come close to turning a profit.

U full of chit engineer. if women' soccer is a loser so will men's soccer. I don't have anything to back this up but a gut feeling. But you do understand how title nine would affect Bama if we added a mens soccer team right?

But but but football is the only sport that generates revenue. That's why we shouldn't care about other sports like basketball, amirite.

So overall the Athletic teams bring in a proit of approx 12 mil. Where does that end up going to? Facility upgrades, transportation upgrades, etc.?

Of course you don't. Do you not think that a men's team would draw more fans than a women's? The last few season's have easily been our women's team's best years. You can see how much having at least a halfway decent team increased the revenue. A men's team would bring in more revenue without a whole lot more added expenses. They already have a stadium so you wouldn't really have to build anything except maybe new locker rooms. I see at least a 0.75 ROI for a men's team where the women are currently at 0.48 ROI.

the second part of my statement was title nine..kapish..you add 25 scholarship to mens sport and you have to add another 25 women's scholarships to another sports ...so the bottom line of the university as a whole for the athletic department would be less. Unless you factor in title 9 there won't be another men's sports.

My father-in-law is somewhat of conspiracy theorist and any time we talk football, this topic always comes up. He basically thinks the people in power at UA (throw in boosters too) line their pockets with the money.

I'm sure it's reinvested or used for upgrades. I've always wondered if there are publically available documents that show where the money goes. You would think everything they did would have to be transparent, but I have no idea how any of that works. From what I can tell they definitely seem to operate by a different set of rules than any other big organizations (businesses, corporations, hospitals, etc).

Whoever said that isn't a real fan. Basketball has always made money. And more than football and basketball can be profitable, given the right circumstances. Baseball could as well.

Bill Battle touched on some of that in the article I linked in the OP.

So what's wrong with adding some more woman's sports to gain soccer? Has to be something we can add like field hockey that would be inexpensive.

We add field hockey, lacrosse or equestrian (which is shockingly cheap) or something. Who cares? Title IX is the least of our worries as long as football is winning

Keep in mind, the University of Alabama lavishes their athletes. Everyone of our programs could easily take budget cuts and still be able to function, heck and still be competitive. More is spent on them because... we can now.

Athletic revenue from the fiscal year before his first season as coach was $87 million, and that number has topped $100 million for each year since, averaging more than $120 million over the last five years.

Holy monkey balls!!

not really at all. Gymnastics is that makes all it's money from their boosters and only FIVE home meets. Actually the Alabama gymnastics team is one of the most expensive gymnastics programs in the country because UA lavishes the athletes and our gymnastics facilities are the best in the nation.

Still seems high cost to run a gymnatics team. And Softball seems high, too.
