TAMU fans, the 'Alabama' coach you got in 2002

From the Alabama perspective. What happened that last year. If Bama fans had known what the guy was really about they wouldn't have wanted to keep him. If TAMU fans had known what the guy was really about, I doubt they would've wanted him. Hindsight being 50/50, according to Pat Dye.

Option to the short side of the field. They'll never expect it.

Always a read by Captain Checkdown(McGee) and when you have a 300 pound running back wait for the pitch, chances are you aren't going to beat anyone.

Bama did have a decent defense with Fran but the guy was a complete ego maniacal hack.

I really want to know all the details of his two year stay in some "tell all" book. It was a blessing in disguise that he left after two years. He leaned on all the talent Dubose left him. And he recruited terribly and left Mike Shula nothing. Fran would have never made it through the sanctions. It would have been worse than his debacle at Texas A&M.

The 2002 defense is still one our most talented of the last 25 years. But Fran would have never lasted once the talent, Dubose had left him, had graduated.

His demands for certain facility improvements, with no proven track record to that point, was rubbing the administration wrong. I've heard stories of him pitching a huge fit because the carpet in his office wasn't the color he wanted.

The on the field product was bad. Where he really did his damage was with the HS coaches whom he royally pissed off

Alabama set us up the bomb.

No. The way he ruined high school relationships was out of control, and something I don't think he would have been capable of at a place like Alabama. Our talent pool was inside our borders, and when he poisoned the well, there was a burnt orange used car salesman waiting in the wings. Mack Brown could have fricked up really big early on, even after riding the Ricky Williams train in to the hearts of the state... he fricked Major in favor of Simms. People still talk about that to this day. That was a fricking abortion of a decision that pissed off people to no end, and all it took was a new face to recruit well, and Fran was just that... except he was so fricking bad high school coaches started refusing to deal with him, and would NEVER let their kids go to A&M. How the frick does that happen? Seriously out of control.

Fran was to TAMU, what Curly was to LSU. These things just happen sometimes, but you recover.

I remember him giving Saban an earful in 2002 after the game for saying he didn't want to lost to "a bunch of cheaters".

I will give one of my favorite recruiting stories about a kid from my high school, Jordan Pugh(safety for the Redskins now)... it was after practice and Jordan has just committed to Fran. Some Alabama coaches were there after practice wanting to talk to him, and Jordan doing his insane after practice jump rope shite, and refuses to talk off his head phones, and the coaches get frustrated and ask on of our coaches to tell him to stop his workout. The Alabama coaches were then asked to leave. I know this doesn't speak to Fran fricking things up, but I always loved that story. Gig 'em, Jordan.

All week, the Internet and all of talk radio were abuzz regarding a tirade supposedly launched into by then-LSU head coach Nick Saban, talking about how he was not going to let their SEC championship (LSU was defending SEC champion at the time) be taken away by a bunch of cheaters. The story ultimately turned out to be apocryphal -- as the events of January of 2007 would eventually show us, clearly Saban had no ill will towards the Tide -- but it nevertheless created a massive amount of tension around the game.

I remember that. Fran would also lean on the goalposts like Bear did back in the day, he still does.

Wasn't Saban the guy that came in at LSU and immediately started getting his boosters to grease the wheels of recruits?

I have no idea what he did at LSU when he arrived there, but I do know he met with the big-money boosters at Alabama, when he took the job, and told them "point blank" he didn't need their help recruiting. Just their help funding the program.
