Damn. That sucks. I had raised that concern some time back and someone had indicated he was no where near being an academic risk. Maybe I'm confusing him with Beckner.

I must have been thinking of Beckner. I see where you had given us a heads up on Strong quite some time back cougar. Apparently struggles with the ACT.

Any concerns about the MLB draft with Doherty? Doesn't seem he's as highly rated as Harrison was at this time last year in baseball but that could change and that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Harrison went in the 2nd round and signed for $1.8 million. Even if the kid goes later than Harrison, he'd still be passing up on a good pay day in order to play college ball.

Yes, Strong is unlikely to qualify. Hutch or Hinds will likely be his destination. Not a foregone conclusion, but likely.

He's a 4* on Rivals. He told PM he would visit Mizzou. Would be a big pick up this late in the game.

We could really use a JUCO at that spot too.

Westbrook is cancelling one of his scheduled OV's so he can take one to Mizzou instead. Grinch apparently recruited him to Wyoming 3 years ago when he was in HS. He'll have 2 to play 2.

I would think that this hurts us recruiting Beckner if his teammate/friend Strong doesn't qualify.

I don't think it will factor for Beckner because their teammate last year Greg Taylor didn't qualify and went the JUCO route. He is still trying to come to Mizzou and I imagine Nate Strong will try to do the same.

ESL is not known for great graduation rates and if we can help a few kids with JUCO and then get a college degree, that's great. We stick with them when they go to JUCO. Just ask Chase Abbington or Sheldon.

Beckner will visit FSU this weekend for his first OV.

That would make neither Strong nor Taylor from the last class.

I guarantee Beckner has been well aware of Strong's struggles and it will have no bearing on his decision. The kid is gonna make his visits because its flattering to have everyone chasing you, but he will be lined up next to Brantley with mom in the stands come next year.

I hope you're right! I think we get him as well.

Has anyone mention this kid as a possible JUCO transfer - WR Anthony Autry?

I found this story about him on another board. LINK

Here's the main blurb from the column...

quote:

Who will get Autry? He has two years of eligibility remaining.

“We’re going look more closely into his college options in the next few weeks, but I know one of my old coaches from Hutchinson is the quarterbacks coach at Missouri. And I know they’re interested in him.”

Interesting, his brother Myles signed with GT over UGA and FSU to play with his brother, then his brother was dismissed from the team. Rather than enroll at GT he has went to prep school and is now the top prep player from 247 and is in the 2015 class. I'd assume they're a package deal, I wouldn't mind that if we miss on Westbrook.

Yes. I should have added this blurb from the column.

To be honest, he sounds like a ready made starter and just what the doctor ordered if he's matured...

quote:

Anthony Autry has put up some good numbers this season at Hutchinson Community College. He was dismissed from Georgia Tech last July after violating the school’s code of conduct.

At Hutchinson, Autry has generated the production at wide receiver that Georgia Tech yearns for. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder has caught 35 passes for 527 yards and eight touchdowns.

“He’s another guy that needed a second chance and a fresh start,” said Hutchinson coach Rion Rhoades, who also has former Georgia Tech running back Travis Custis on his roster.

“Anthony has got really good ability to go get the football. He’s a really good route-runner. He has good length. The physical attributes are good. He understands football really well.

“We’ve had guys that are faster at the receiver position than him, even though he’s not slow. So I wouldn’t say he’s a flat-out burner. He’s just made a lot of big plays for us. He’s made some pretty impressive catches, such as going over a corner in the end zone. He’s just a playmaker.”
