The number next to incomers is their 247 recruit rating.

QUARTERBACKS

Who's gone: Jameil Showers (transferred to UTEP)
Who's back: #2 Johnny Manziel (6-1, 200, SO), #16 Matt Joeckel (6-4, 234, JR), #6 Matt Davis (6-2, 206, RS-FR)
Who's new: #7 Kenny Hill 90 (6-1, 215, FR)

Manziel enters the fall as the unquestioned QB this year leaving really little intrigue. But with Showers transferring, the backup job is up for grabs. Joeckel is the only other QB to have taken a snap but his slow delivery fit Sherman's WCO timing routes more than the short, quick reads in Sumlin's offense. Matt Davis meanwhile has struggled with consistency and accuracy and so neither particularly shined or separated himself in spring ball. This opens up the door for highly touted Kenny Hill from Southlake Carroll to step into the backup role immediately. Early returns on Hill from voluntary summer workouts have been quite positive.

RUNNING BACKS

Who's gone: Christine Michael (NFL)
Who's back: #1 Ben Malena (5-8, 195, SR), #3 Trey Williams (5-8, 185, SO)
Who's new: #5 Brandon Williams (OU transfer, 6-0, 192, SO), #21 Tra Carson (Ore transfer, 6-0, 227, SO), #20 James White 90 (6-0, 210, FR)

The A&M backfield talent is pretty unprecedented despite former 5-star talent Christine Michael's departure. Ben Malena proved to be the complete back that best fit Sumlin's offense last season as, despite his smallish stature he proved to run with power and be a superlative blocker. Trey Williams showed flashes and has a terrific burst that OC McKinney made full use of in the Cotton Bowl. But it's the two transfers that may be the most exciting as they both bring aspects the Aggie offense lacked in 2012. OU transfer Brandon Williams seems to just glide and eat up yards. Slim, as his teammates call him, is also an excellent receiver who we'll probably see spread out wide quite a bit. Oregon transfer Tra Carson could be the answer to the short yardage issues A&M had most of last season. Carson is just a tough guy to bring down and was named scout team MVP last season for his role in mimicking players like Eddie Lacy in practice. James White seemed sort of forgotten in this talented recruiting class but the 4-star from Pearland is a great fit for this team. He's almost a bigger version of Ben Malena who just puts on the hard hat and plays everywhere. While he won't likely see much time as a RB right off the bat, it's possible he'll play for his ability on special teams.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Who's gone: Ryan Swope (NFL), Uzoma Nwachukwu (eligibility expired), Kenric McNeal (eligibility expired), Thomas Johnson (left school)
Who's back: #13 Mike Evans (6-5, 225, SO), #84 Malcome Kennedy (6-0, 200, JR), #11 Derel Walker (6-2, 185, SR), #10 LeKendrick Williams (5-8, 170, JR), #23 Sabian Holmes (5-11, 175, SO), #18 Edward Pope (6-4, 170, RS-FR)
Who's new: #9 Ricky Seals-Jones 98 (6-5, 225, FR), #4 Ja'Quay Williams 95 (6-3, 210, FR), #25 LaQuvionte Gonzalez 94 (5-10, 165, FR), #83 Sebastian Larue 94 (5-11, 180, FR), #80 Kyrion Parker 91 (6-2, 190, FR), #19 Jeremy Tabuyo 87 (5-11, 180, FR),

With long time starters Swope and Nwachukwu leaving, A&M's lack of depth at the position becomes apparent. It's magnified by promising freshman Thomas Johnson's disappearance and withdrawal from school as it means that 3 of the 4 leading receivers from 2012 are gone. Obviously leading WR Evans returns and now fully healthy, there is reason to expect even more production from him. And Malcolm Kennedy, a role player until Johnson left, emerged down the stretch. Given the opportunity this spring, Ed Pope, who redshirted in 2012 and was jointly scout team MVP, showed that despite not being as thick as maybe you'd like, has a knack for getting open. His development allowed the coaches to test Evans in the slot at times in the spring which adds a different dimension. Other returners like Darel Walker and LeKendrick Williams (beep-beep) also seemed to make large strides this spring. But without a doubt, A&M will be dependent on the incoming class to contribute and fast. The heralded class includes talent in all shapes and sizes from the giants RSJ, Jaquay Williams, and Kyrion Parker to the diminutive but electric Quiv Gonzalez. While the talent is certainly there WR Coach Beatty can be pretty demanding. Jaquay Williams was an early enrollee but struggled at times in the spring with all he was asked to do. Meanwhile many thought RSJ might struggle in the transition to WR (he played QB in high school) but early 7v7 returns suggest he is dominating this summer. Most will probably play but, like Pope last year, despite the need, if a guy isn't ready, he may well redshirt.

TIGHT ENDS

Who's gone: Michael Lamothe (eligibility expired)
Who's back: #81 Nehemiah Hicks (6-4, 250, SR)
Who's new: #87 Cameron Clear 89 (6-6, 270, JR)

The tight end spot is a bit of a hybrid in Sumlin's offense. It moves around a lot from the backfield, to inline, to out wide. It was not a particularly prolific position in 2012 as Hicks and Lamothe combined to catch only 9 passes. But that may well change with the addition of Clear, a massive human being that proved in the spring to be not only an elite blocker, but also a decent target in the pass game. After witnessing the mismatches that La Tech's tempo combined with their Big Bone formation can create, you can expect to see both Clear and Hicks on the field some to try to replicate this against certain opponents. So while the position is still not likely to be a focal point in this offense, expect to see more creative use of it and more touches for them in 2013.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN

Who's gone: Luke Joeckel (NFL), Patrick Lewis (eligibility expired), Nathan Gutekunst (retired)
Who's back: #75 Jake Matthews (6-5, 305, SR), #70 Cedric Ogbuehi (6-5, 300, JR), #51 Jarvis Harrison (6-4, 320, JR), #56 Mike Matthews (6-3, 280, SO), #74 Germain Ifedi (6-5, 320, RS-FR), #79 Joseph Cheek (6-7, 300, SO), $68 Ben Compton (6-4, 307, JR), #77 Shep Klinke (6-7, 305, SR), #78 Garrett Gramling (6-6, 309, JR), #71 Kimo Tipoti (6-3, 320, RS-FR)
Who's new: #73 Jeremiah Stuckey 81 (6-4, 285, SO), #69 Ishmael Wilson 92 (6-4, 280, FR), #76 Joas Aguilar 87 (6-4, 270, FR)

There is no doubt that any line would feel the loss of an Outland Trophy winner like Luke Joeckel and a 4-year starter like Pat Lewis. But this year's Aggie line will again be long on experience despite only one senior. That one is pre-season All-American Jake Matthews who will slide from RT, where he started for the last 3 years, to LT to take over Joeckel's spot. Ced Ogbuehi, meanwhile finally gets his chance to shine moving into his natural tackle spot after spending the last two years at RG. The third multi-year starter returning is LG Jarvis Harrison. Those three are not only all multi-year starters but are projected first day NFL draft picks. Completing the line will be Jake's little brother Mike Matthews at center and manchild Germain Ifedi who seemed to beat out the upperclassmen with relative ease this spring as he made the switch inside to guard. The primary backups are even experienced as C/OG Ben Compton, OG/OT Shep Klinke, and OT Joseph Cheek have all played extensively. The coaches had some concern long term at tackle and brought in JUCO transfer Stuckey but with Matthews return and Cheek playing really well this spring, expect him, as well as both incoming freshmen, to redshirt this year.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN

Who's gone: Damontre Moore (NFL), Spencer Nealy (eligibility expired), Jonathan Mathis (eligibility expired), Shayvion Hatten (transferred to SFA), Rhontae Scales (graduated)
Who's back: #42 Kirby Ennis (6-4, 300, SR), #95 Julien Obioha (6-4, 255, SO), #83 Alonzo Williams (6-4, 280, SO), #72 Gavin Stansbury (6-4, 270, JR), #89 Ivan Robinson (6-3, 270, JR), #41 Brandon Alexander (6-6, 255, SO), #90 Polo Manukainiu (6-5, 270, RS-FR), #35 Tyrell Taylor (6-4, 230, JR), #50 Tyrone Taylor (6-3, 240, RS-FR)
Who's new: #99 Isaiah Golden 95 (6-2, 320, FR), #10 Daeshon Hall 94 (6-6, 225, FR), #55 Justin Manning 94 (6-1, 270, FR), #98 Hardreck Walker 90 (6-2, 290, FR), #96 Jay Arnold 87 (6-4, 265, FR), #92 Jordan Points 83 (6-3, 260, FR)

The switch to a 4-man front last year ended up being successful because everything seemed to come together. Damontre Moore exploded with his hand in the dirt. Spencer Nealy played out of his mind as an undersized 3-tech tackle. And sparsely recruited Julien Obioha started every game as a true freshman. Rather miraculously, the defensive line not only wasn't a weakness, it was an above average unit. Whether Terry Price can replicate that kind of miracle in 2013 is going to play a huge role in whether A&M will be good or great. Probably no position saw a larger upgrade in talent than the d-line though. The Sherman staff had a horrible time recruiting d-line and left a pretty bare cupboard. Price reeled in four 4-star instate talents in the class (Sherman's staff hadn't inked a single one since 2008). It's difficult to make an impact as a freshman but this talented class will provide much needed depth and create sorely needed competition. Kirby Ennis and Julien Obioha return to anchor the line and Alonzo Williams has moved inside to be a 3-tech tackle - at least until the freshmen are ready. With Obioha likely moving to rush end, the battle is on for the SDE spot with Gavin Stansbury the current favorite. But by season's end, one of the young DTs (bet on Manning) will emerge and Williams will slide back outside where he showed flashes late last season. Btw, I listed the Taylors here despite being LBs on the roster. They function as pass rushing specialists but I'm unconvinced they are ever going to find a fit in Snyder's scheme.

LINEBACKERS

Who's gone: Sean Porter (NFL), Jonathan Stewart (eligibility expired), Michael Richardson (retired), Domonique Patterson (retired), Jordan Richmond (disciplinary)
Who's back: #8 Steven Jenkins (6-2, 220, SR), #16 Donnie Baggs (6-1, 230, JR), #9 Nate Askew (6-4, 225, SR), #40 Shaun Ward (6-2, 244, JR)
Who's new: #3 Tommy Sanders 92 (6-2, 215, JR), #52 Brett Wade 90 (6-1, 225, FR), #48 Darian Claiborne 89 (6-0, 225, FR), #13 Reggie Chevis 88 (6-1, 250, FR), #45 Jordan Mastrogiovanni 87 (6-2, 230, FR), #33 Shaan Washington 87 (6-2, 210, FR)
Transfer (will redshirt the '13 season): A.J. Hilliard (from TCU, 6-2, 210, SO)

The loss of Porter and Stewart can't be underestimated. They played an enormous amount last season as until the LSU game A&M used a 4-man rotation (those two plus Jenkins and Baggs) for the 3 LB spots. Baggs got reps at each spot before Richardson emerged as a solid option late in the season. With the injury and retirement of Richardson means 3/5th of the LBs counted on late last season are gone. Jenkins returns at WLB and Baggs is slated at MLB. Nate Askew changed positions in the spring to complete a 2-deep but settled in fairly well and will likely be in the rotation from the start, probably backing up JUCO transfer Tommy Sanders at SLB. The overall lack of bodies led to a large incoming class as well as a transfer. While Chavis and Wade were early enrollees who participated in the spring, the buzz at the moment is around Mastrogiovanni and Washington. Expect to see a split with a couple of the fish redshirting but the rest will play early and often.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Who's gone: Steven Terrell (eligibility expired), Dustin Harris (eligibility expired), Desmond Gardiner (graduated)
Who's back: #29 Deshazor Everett (6-0, 185, JR), #1 De'Vante Harris (5-10, 175, SO), #31 Howard Matthews (6-2, 200, JR), #14 Floyd Raven Sr (6-2, 190, JR), #4 Toney Hurd Jr (5-9, 180, SR), #25 Clay Honeycutt (6-2, 200, JR), #7 Tramain Jacobs (6-1, 190, SR), #26 Devonta Burns (6-0, 201, SO), #30 Johntel Franklin (6-2, 200, SR), #15 Kenneth Marshall (6-0, 191, RS-FR)
Who's new: #23 Kameron Miles 92 (6-1, 215, FR), #6 Noel Ellis 90 (5-10, 175, FR), #22 Tavares Garner 90 (6-0, 175, FR), #28 Victor Davis 88 (6-0, 175, FR), #37 Alex Sezer Jr 86 (5-9, 180, FR), #36 Jonathan Wiggins 83 (6-3, 210, FR)

The strength of the A&M defense is without a doubt the secondary. While Stephen Terrell and Dustin Harris developed into steady options in 2012, at best they would be described as adequate. Everett emerged as a star though despite being called upon to temporarily play safety until Howard Matthews found his sea legs. By seasons end Everett and Matthews were the key to the secondary. Add in the talented Devante Harris who is probably the best cover man and the secondary looks as good as it has in years. The key question will be at free safety where Raven moved in the spring. Raven is an exciting player but that's not always good as the last line of defense. Tony Hurd is small and probably not an ideal SEC safety but he excels as a nickel back and provides veteran leadership. After years of horrible secondary recruiting and a lot of major reaches, Sherman's 2011 class was the turning point. That group (Everett, Raven, Matthews) will lead this secondary but the infusion of freshman will finally give the kind of depth that is required. No more La Tech catastrophes when there simply aren't enough bodies to match up. And despite a nice starting group, if anyone struggles (looking at you Floyd), it won't surprise me at all to see one of the freshman wrest the job away. Having this kind of depth and talent will also greatly enhance special team play.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Who's gone: Ryan Epperson (eligibility expired)
Who's back: #24 Taylor Bertolet (5-9, 174, SO), #38 Drew Kaser (6-3, 220, SO)
Who's new: none

Frankly, it's hard to imagine PKing could be worse this year. Bertolet has the leg as can be evidenced by his kickoffs but struggles horribly with consistency. His issues were factors in both losses and it seems rather likely the Aggies will have a game eventually come down to him again. Kaser is another with a big leg but lack of consistency led to him being beat out by Epperson who wasn't tremendous but he was solid enough. You can tell we lack confidence in our entire kicking situation simply because we have offered multiple scholarships to kickers in the class of '14 but for this year at least, these are the two we likely are rolling with for better or worse.

some talent observations for the defense

Rival 4-stars+

DL
SR - 0
JR - 1 (Robinson)
SO - 0
FR - 4 (Golden, Manning, Walker, Hall)

LB
SR - 0
JR - 0
SO - 0
FR - 0

DB
SR - 0
JR - 2 (Matthews, Raven)
SO - 1 (Harris)
FR - 3 (Miles, Ellis, Garner)

Obviously we've had our issues in past years recruiting talent. Sherman's staff had a knack for finding hidden gems (Moore, Obioha, Porter, Everett) but it's hard to build depth that way. Our LB recruiting still lags but we did pick up four that were rated 5.7 (the highest 3*) last year. But based on recruiting, it appears the LB spots will be what holds us back from being elite down the line.

And for '14 we already have 6 commitments from 4*+ defensive players, more than the entire roster outside of the incoming class. The raw talent is increasing rather rapidly. The question for this year is how quickly we can assimilate the young kids into the system and whether we have enough Sherman gems to be average. IMO, we really only need to be average on defense because our offense is going to be pretty comparable to last year. But there is no question that the defense is going to see marked improvements in the coming years.

btw, you are always going to have guys like Ivan Robinson or Jordan Richmond (who is no longer on the team) that don't pan out. So it's somewhat normal that the numbers are higher for newer classes. So by year 4*+ we signed on defense:

2009 (what would be rs-srs) - 2 (JUCO Judie, J-Stew)
2010 - 2 (JUCO Mathis, Robinson)
2011 - 2 (Matthews, Raven)
2012 - 2 (Harris, Richmond)
2013 - 7 (Golden, Manning, Walker, Hall, Miles, Ellis, Garner)

not terribly surprising. Was really sort of surprised how much time he got in the spring. There is no pressing reason he had to quit that I know of. Maybe he just sees the writing on the wall with the incoming freshmen. Hopefully he made use of that ship to get a degree!

Think that puts us at 79 on ship for the fall giving us 6 to hand out to upper classmen walk-ons (Lamascus, Bass both seem like shoe-ins).

One week til the players officially report!

Which Freshman DB do you think sees the most time? Miles?

Or you could go to the Aggie Athletics Webpage, go to the "football" tab, then the "roster" tab and go to the 2012-13 roster, then compare it to the current one.

It's a good question. I'm not a talent scout by any means and guys often surprise. Once we see where the coaches place them in the rotation in practices it becomes easier but until they get to that point, it's nothing more than wild speculation.

That said, I've been told that Miles is "raw." I also think he's most likely a BS so he'd be behind Matthews who played really well down the stretch. I honestly think Vic Davis may have a better shot at extensive playing time just because Raven at FS is more of a question mark. But that's just me guessing where Yates is going to put them on the field. I'm not 100% sure where he sees them tbh.

OT Joas Aguilar - RS

OT Ishmael Wilson - RS

DE Daeshon Hall - extensive PT

DE Jordan Points - RS

DE Jay Arnold - RS

DT Isaiah Golden - extensive PT, possible starter

DT Hardreck Walker - extensive PT, possible starter

DT Justin Manning - extensive PT, possible starter

LB Brett Wade - extensive PT

LB Reggie Chevis - extensive PT

LB Jordan Mastrogiovanni - extensive PT

LB Darion Claiborne - possible RS

Pretty sure he'll play significantly. Outside of the two starters - Everett and Harris - Jacobs is the only returning CB on the roster and frankly, he wasn't very good last year. I expect at least two of the three freshman corners to play significant minutes and one of them may well start vs Rice given Everett is probably going to be suspended.

Word around the campfire is that Miles tore his meniscus. He'll miss most of or all of fall camp and maybe the first few weeks of the season. I doubt Sumlin even mentions it because he doesn't talk about injuries. Seems pretty likely he redshirts.

btw, I truly love Coach Price. He's just a cool dude. You can't read his twitter when you're hungry though as like half his posts involve some sort of grilled meats

DLine had a cookout at his house this week. I suggest eating before you watch
