To preface this, I'm not starting this thread to cast negativity on your current team. I actually think your schedule sets up nicely for a bounce back season. After reading many of your comments on here and elsewhere though it's pretty clear Pinkel's seat is very hot and many of you seem to have hit the breaking point with him already. Even with a good season, he's getting long in the tooth.

Who do you see as being the prime candidates to replace him if the job comes open next offseason? Who are the successful coaches out there with past Mizzou ties? As an A&M fan who has been through the coaching carousel a few times I know there are always coaches out there that posters will fall in love with

Woody.

With any luck he'll bring the Wagon.

Kirby Smart and Mark Hudspeth are names I've heard. I heard second hand that this is being discussed on our pay boards, and Smart is the name mentioned most often. We'll see.

would be great.

I figure we'll take a shot at Les Miles first just to keep the trend continuing.

I say we give Jim Tressel another chance.

But I suppose Pinkel deserves another year or two after all he's done for Mizzou football, even though I'm not at all excited about saying that. If only the guy could recruit a little better.

Only problem I have with either of them is they may not be around for long before they move on. Doesn't Hudspeth have pretty strong ties to MSU? I don't think Smart is going to wait around until Saban retires, so I guess the question is what other big programs would be looking. He's sure to be at or near the top of many people's lists.

He deserves this year. I don't know about beyond that if he doesn't show some sign of turning things around.

Agree 100%.

And as far as Kirby Smart, I think he'd definitely consider Mizzou. We'd have to pay him well, but I think Mizzou would be attractive. We're improving our facilities. Our fans are patient, and passionate about football. He's a character guy, which is a fit. He would be given all the tools he would need to succeed. Plus, he's got fairly young kids, and Columbia is a great place for families. He likes to push academics, which also fits Mizzou. I think he'd listen at the very least.

And yes, Hudspeth has ties to MSU. But Mullins isn't likely to go anywhere anytime soon, and I think they're fairly happy on both sides.

Both of these guys would not be likely to finish their careers at Mizzou. But that's OK, as long as they leave the program in better shape than where they start, recruit the south well, and establish us as a player in the SEC. Then we can go after another good coach.

This is all JMO, of course.

True enough. We do need someone that can get this thing kickstarted in the SEC. I'd love either one personally.

I know alot of people won't like this suggestion but I agree with Jim Tressell and/ or Bobby Petrino. While Petrino has character issues he has shown he has what has to be done to succeed in the SEC. also with all of his issues else where Colombia could truly be his last chance to coach at a high level. Also has ties to the south east, and put together very competitive teams in the west division imagine what he could do in the east. Again JMO. But I'd be overall happy with either of those two hires.

I still have faith in Coach Pinkel...

If and when we have to find a replacement we HAVE to go after an SEC blueblood like Kirby. With a huge salary that we will have to pay we should have instant access to top SEC recruiting grounds!

Hudspeth and Smart would both be very solid candidates. I would prefer Hud just because he's been a head coach before. I would think you could offer more than MSU if they were to come calling an try to take him.

Petrino is someone I think you would have to consider. He could probably win pretty big right away since the personnel you have would set up well for his offense. Your AD would have to decide if its worth the trouble

It will be someone not on anybody's radar. Typical Alden M.o. but it has been fairly effective for him.

Petrino.
you know he wants back in the SEC what better place than a program who wants to win in the SEC (if in fact Alden gives a shite about that).

If its Petrino next year I will start watching another team. Looking at big names wishful thinking I would Like Tressel or Butch Davis. Good defensive minds, Davis can recruit anywhere and Tressel has ties to the Big Ten states we are trying to win over. Outside of them I like Smart from Bama. Maybe Golden from Miami. Hes been a very solid recruiter and I think would do well in the SEC.

At the end of the season, find the coaches in the MAC/WAC/Sun Belt that are "up and comers".

Make a list.

Those will be your Mizzou head coaching candidates.

I doubt it is anyone from the West. It will be a coach with ties to either the south east or Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee, and Missouri recruiting areas.

Tim Deruyter will be the hot mid-major name after this season I would bet.

Would be an interesting candidate for Mizzou. He would recruit well and he could get them back into homes in Texas. I didn't think he would be as successful as he's been honestly

Isn't he a California guy? I know he was at A&M for what? A year? Did he develop pretty strong ties there in that time? Just not sure how strong his connections are to either the southeast or the midwest for that matter and recruiting right now is a concern to me.

ETA - Not saying I wouldn't like him. Just looking for more info on him.
