I'll admit, when I watched the spring game of the Johnelle/Paulie P disaster, I was fooled like a lot of people. I thought the offense was a little better than they were, and I thought the defense had found their balls. I was wrong, we were wrong, we ended up going 4-8 but we all know the story. I did a little write up of my thoughts on the spring game. In the write up I highlighted a few players specifically on defense.

AJ Turner was the first guy to catch my attention because he would lay hits on people that you could hear in Springdale. He went on to become a freshman All-American while dishing out some nice hits all season long. The other guy that stood out to me was Deatrich Wise. I remember asking the guy beside me who #48 was because he seemed like a freak of nature. He was infinitely faster than anybody else we had on the D-line. He would come out of nowhere at 100mph to make a play in the backfield.

I have been watching the 2013 spring game this evening and Deatrich Wise has been all over the place making plays in the backfield. I really think that, barring injury or legal problems, he will be a star before he leaves Arkansas. His combination of speed and power is ridiculous to me.

I really only wrote this all over the place football babble to get a football discussion going on this board. Deatrich Wise is a guy that I will be keeping my eye on maybe more than other players because he continues to impress me with his progression.

What players or player have caught your eye in a similar way?

I would definitely agree with Wise. That play he makes in the first half where he comes down the line of scrimmage to catch Arinze I think on a toss to the boundary was impressive. That looked like it was going to be a good play and Wise came all the way across the field to catch him for a loss. I'm stoked to see what he is going to do over the next few years.

I thought Kody Walker looked very good as well. He made some very nice runs. His performance is really why I don't want Dyer. To me it looked like he is going to be a quality back for us and he is the one that will lose most if not all of his potential carries because of Dyer. I just don't want him to miss another year of potential playing time.

Going a different direction, I was very disappointed in Voelzke. His run blocking was absolutely terrible. I had high hopes for him after this past season but I think he will end up getting buried on the depth chart.

I think as long as Nate Holmes stays good in the classroom they're going to find ways to get him on the field. I kind of see him being the sweep/screen back. He's dangerous in the open field, and I expect him to take a couple to the house.

Coleman brings some added thump to the secondary that I believe we really need. He lays the wood every time he hits somebody. I don't think he is going to set the world on fire his first year at Arkansas, but he should be pretty solid. He is definitely one of our best hitters already.

Yeah he looked pretty good when they finally let him play in the second half. I would like to see what he could do behind the first team line.

I could see some serious open field insanity if he and Collins are in the game at the same time. I can't help but think Collins will live up to the hype. His ability to change direction and maintain his speed is elite.

With all this talk of RBs, gotta mention Kiero. Didn't bielema say something, within a few weeks of getting the job, like, if I had you last year I would've had a 2000 yd rusher? And we know how much BB continues to praise him. Have to think he will be used a lot.

Yeah he's also been quoted as saying something like "Now that is a G*d damned full back". If Kiero stays healthy the facemask grave yard is going to need an expansion. I thought it was actually Joel Thomas who said that if he had Kiero he would have had a 2,000 yard rusher at Washington. I'm not sure though. He's a beast for sure and one of my favorite running backs.

Agree on Collins. His jump cut is already next level good.

Wise is gonna be a beast. I really hope Flowers stays after this year because having Wise and Flowers on opposite ends of the line will REALLY help soften the blow of losing Jones and Thomas on the inside.

Our defensive ends just keep getting better and better. Smith/Flowers are better than Bequette/Wright and Wise/Winston could end up better than Smith/Flowers.

Did Coach Beilima show what kind of O he is going to run or was it pretty generic?
Also I heard Coach Petrino used to let the WR's run free in practice(DB's weren't allowed to contest). Has CBB done away with this (if true)?

I think we got to see a little glimpse of what the offense will be. I think it will be closer to what Tennessee's offense was last year than Wisconsin's. Chaney likes to throw the ball around and we don't have the personnel for an all out physical attack. All we heard about in the spring was the progression of our O-line and rbs, but in the spring game we threw the ball quite a bit.

I think in year two we will have a more power based offense and year three we will see the offense that BB wants to run. This year is going to be a weird mix though.
