Hard to tell with these types of things. We should have some serious talent, depth and experience built up by 2015-16 with the classes were bringing in. I think we should be in the mix every year for the foreseeable future (maybe a slight step back to 9 or so wins next year with JFF probably gone) and it could really come together in 2015 or 16 if things go smoothly at QB. I don't think it happens this year, too thin at key spots on D.

If its happening soon, it will be next year with JFF.

Once he's gone, A&M will take a small step back. The stacked recruiting classes will start to boost A&M back up in 2016-17. Hard to tell how good A&M will be because there is so many unknowns. Who knows if Sumlin is still around (and not in the NFL).

Year 3 of johnny. If he leaves after this year, it won't happen anytime soon.

Manziel's unique abilities and personal fame are helping recruiting tremendously and we'll have a lot more depth across the board after he's gone. It may be a bit of the Peyton Manning/Tee Martin effect. But we don't need Manziel to win a title imo. Of course I also think people way overestimate his impact.

He's a good QB and no doubt finding that guy can sometimes be difficult but I think we now have a few in the pipeline. I think people are going to be really shocked at how easily we transition from him (and how explosive this offense can still be with a different kind of QB). I do agree if he leaves after this year we'll struggle a little in '14 as we break in a new QB.

But some are too easily buying into the hype that Sumlin is just lucky in the talent (both players and coaches) on the team's he coaches. It's no accident at all. Manziel is more a product of this coaching staff than many realize. They've redesigned the playbook and built an entirely unique scheme specifically to maximize his individual talent. And without the right coaching, guidance, and recognition of his skill set, he'd never have been able to be unleashed the way he was. I fully believe this staff and Sumlin will make a star out of our next QB too.

This year Sumlin's system should be running at full speed. So its this year as long as we stay healthy. However if it doesn't happen we'll be looking for one of the stud QB recruits to learn the system quick. However it would likely be in the 2015 season in this scenario. If Johnny takes his 40% option and stays at A&M one more year then we're looking at the 2014 season. I think Sumlin and his family are very Happy here. Just from what I've seen around town, and the fact he is building a McMansion in town.

I'm with you. He has a history of tailoring offense around talent. Coaches don't just get lucky in finding a Case Keenum, then finding a Johnny Manziel who fits perfectly in their system.

I've had the opportunity to visit with a retired college coach who was known as an offensive innovator in his day and he told me straight up that he "fell into" his signature offense by trying to figure out how to get the ball as quickly as possible into the hands of his best athletes. He laughs about people over-analyzing his own schemes and system. I don't know whether Sumlin would say the exact same thing, but I suspect a lot of successful coaches share his attitude.

There may be a few exceptions like Leach or Mumme who are system first guys, but generally speaking I think sports pundits tend to overemphasize the "system" and coaches with sustainable success are more focused on the personnel than their own innovative genius.

That same retired coach I referenced earlier - now in his 80's - can recall details about guys who played for him decades ago like he's still trying to sign them out of high school.

I have to believe Sumlin wins at least one. The sports god owe us. We are due.

When I saw the title thread, my first reaction was:

But since some of my fellow Ags decided to chime in, I guess I will too.

I've been an Aggie for too long to unabashedly claim that we're going to win it all this year or the next. Having said that, we do have a small (emphasize the word small) chance of winning a natty this year because our schedule is Bama-esque in terms of having an "easy" path to the championship (or as easy as one could have in the SEC). We would have to beat Alabama and remain as healthy team-wise as we were in 2012.

I don'r care when it happens; I just would like the Aggies to win a natty title in my lifetime.

He has roots in CS, and Houston is only 90 miles away. Sumlin has several small school-age children, and College Station has quality educational options coupled with a safe environment. More importantly, I believe that deep down the college ranks are the ultimate home for Coach Sumlin. Here's a quote from his University of Houston days:

“The reason I coach college football and not professional football is that I really enjoy what happens between 18 and 23. It’s a life-changing time for young men, and we have a direct impact on that. We have a slogan around here: ‘You don’t have to be THE man, you need to be A man.’ That’s all we want. To be a man encompasses a lot.”

I agree with this statement. If Sumlin could place Case Keenum into the record books, then I believe that the QB position will be well spoken for in the years that follow the Manziel era.

Our QB battle to replace Johnny, whenever it occurs, is going to be fun to watch. Could be a lot of talent with different skill sets competing. That's an exciting prospect with our current offensive minds on staff

This, but with one caveat:

I want it to be during my dad's lifetime, too, if it happens. Wouldn't be an Ag if it weren't for him going through A&M first.

I think A&M is finally a destination job. I've never seen conference expansion mean so much for a program, I think A&M becomes a team that hovers around top 10 recruiting, and top 10 in rankings year in year out.

As far as winning a NC, i think it happens in the next decade for sure, maybe more than one. It's really hard for me to say things like this, bc my BAS makes me nervous about jinxing it lol
