Am I way off course thinking he wanted money for his sick mom? Definitely not defending him.

If there is a glass half full aspect to this whole situation, it's that the other players didn't go along with it and alerted the coaches.

If some of these kids would put the same effort in practice and prep to do their craft as they do trying to be a criminal, they just might earn a good living as a pro. At the very least learn work ethic that serves them well into a career outside of sports.
