Young Bret decided he needed to take a stand in favor of a rule to SLOW DOWN offenses... for "player safety" reasons. (I know... )

quote:

Bielema, a Big Ten run-the-clock guy, concedes he doesn't run an offense that is fast paced.

"We want to run the ball. We want to maintain the clock…"

Auburn will want to go a lot faster than that in 2013. Not Bielema.

"There is a lot of truth that the way offensive philosophies are driven now there are times you can't get a defensive situation in for eight, 10, 12-play drives," he said. "That has an effect on safety of that student-athlete, especially the bigger defensive linemen."

His idea for change?

"Every first down you get a 15-second substitution which would slow down offenses that want to go fast. Most offenses that are high tempo want to play as fast as you can because it limits defensive calls."

Is a rule change being considered?

"Oh, yeah. It's out there," he said.

And in response to Bielema's naked attempt to mold the SEC into his beloved Big 10's image?

quote:

Malzahn took exception to the notion that his fast-paced offense is an injury risk to tiring defensive players who cannot be substituted because of the quick play calling. Arkansas coach Bret Bielema offered that Tuesday and said a rule change could be in the future.

"I'd say that's probably a more in-shape issue than anything," Malzahn said.

P.S. Has this been on the SEC Rant? If not, somebody feel free to put it there and see the Hawgs defend their new Big 10 offense and coach.

honestly, i wouldn't have a problem with a 5 second delay on first downs for substitutions. bret is right to an extent but that is also having an effect on the offensive personel also.

It's a lose/lose situation imo.

Big hit via Jadeveon Clowney or said Clowney straining a hamstring because of uptempo offense. . . Pick your poison

Keep the rules as they are... In fact turn back some of the rules... go back to actually calling holding...

Football is one of the few sports that changes the rules every year. If you can not beat them, change the rules.

F that. There's holding every play. Literally. Every play.

Defensive players are a lot less likely to get hurt because offensive players are running around them in a hurry up offense than offensive players are to get hurt by defensive players hitting them more and setting up harder hits in a slow paced offense. So defensive players should be protected but not offensive?

What's next not being able to move anyone after they line up because the defensive players might get a strain trying to follow their guy and realign?

If they keep changing the rules we will end up playing tag football with games being played like chess. A player on one team can move so many steps then one from the other team until the ball carrier is tagged. What fun that will be.

As long as we all get a trophy. It is unfair that bammer get's 3 of 4 Natty's as well. They should share 1 of those with Arky.
