While we're on the topic of illicit drugs and UGA, did anyone on this board ever take his class at UGA? Anyone know him? What was he like? What was his class like?

I can imagine how interesting some of his lectures could have been.....

Yes... He loved conspiracy type stuff and had very in depth knowledge of our secret wars and the evolution of the Middle East.

In depth knowledge or what he THOUGHT? Just where was he supposed to get this in-depth knowledge? These conspiracy nutjobs believe anything and everything...

He wrote books on it with footnotes and interviews from real people. It was also stated by some that he actually was recruiting for the CIA while at UGA....

I had a class at UA that had to do with him(UA published his book IIRC), and he was described as anything but a conspiracy nut. A professor of mine alluded that he was much more than a bystander. In 1995 he received the CIA's Studies in Intelligence award. Don't think too many tinfoil hat people receive that. It was also alluded to that he was some sort of mouth piece for the CIA, putting out their side of the story and passing it off as a 3rd party. Hell, one of his stories is on their website.

Anyways, I was always interested with him and his involvement with "Air America". He came up a few times in a data analysis class. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he had his hand in the opium trade.

He either wrote what the CIA told him to write about it. Or what he thought they wanted to hear.

He worked for the CIA.

I agree. The CIA's stated need for covert secerecy.......IS TO ALLOW THEM TO "CONSPIRE"!!! And only a "nutjob" would work for this unethical and arguably evil agency that believes it has a right to do anyting and everything.

We should do like President Kennedy once urged us to do and "splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it into the winds"............

Unfortunately, we know what happened to JFK for taking that stance, so it'll probably never happen now........

I had a history professor similar to this, but his work with the CIA had been closer to the 50's-70's. It was a World History class fromm 1800 to modern times, so he had some interesting knowledge of certain events.

Let me know how that Black Site in Ghana is..

Speaking of that, it was said he helped develop the post 9/11 playbook on "advanced interrogation" techniques, waterboarding and the confined spaces. I'm assuming he learned some of those from his days in SE Asia.

Anyways, wished I could have taken his class.

He dealt with alot of policy making in dealing with the Russians and some civil right movement stuff.

He had some knowledge of backdoor negotiations between real power brokers that most didn't really know about and such.

It was 12 or 13 years ago though. I couldn't really state specifics, but I enjoyed his class which should tell you enough.

Conspiracy theories have a negative connotation. He gave alternative views of world events. I learned about what happened in Iran in the 50s that shaped the 79 revolution and their continued hate of us from him.

He spoke of Southern Air a lot and the coincidental rise in heroin addiction in the US during the Vietnam war.

Also had interesting views on how Cuba as our enemy, but leased a base to us through it all...

But, Cracker....... Those rag-heads over there "hate us because of our freedom". It has nothing to do with the U.S. governments documented role in overthrowing their democratically-elected government and then supporting an authoritarian regime over them for decades. Sheesh..... That's crazy nutjob conspiracy talk.

Iranians hate us because we are a bunch of badasses and they're just jealous...........War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Smoke if ya got em.........
