Time to fire up FlightAware, folks. We have a title to defend.

Obvious target here is Casey Dunn (HC Samford), but that could be viewed as the safe "Auburn" hire. Who else we got that could be targeted? Could we see Gabe Gross get promoted?

Hoke's saying we're planning actually shelling out big money for a big name, but I wouldn't mind us going after Mark Calvi from USA. Was the pitching coach for USCe when they won the two NCs a few years back.

Hoke just retweeted:
quote:

@CraigMcDaniel:
1) Butch Thompson - Mississippi St
2) Dan Heefner - Dallas Baptist
3) Mark Calvi - USA

All assuming TimCorbin says no haha.

*Cleaned up for those that don't read Twitter

Not entirely sure what he meant by retweeting it, but I figured I'd post it here anyway

I'd be shocked if Casey Dunn didn't at least get an interview.

And the wheels begin to turn:

Samford's Casey Dunn would 'love' opportunity to talk to Auburn about baseball job

quote:

AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn has not yet reached out to Casey Dunn, but if athletics director Jay Jacobs calls, the Samford coach says he will listen.

"Without question, man," Dunn told Kevin Scarbinksy during an interview on WZNNE's Smashmouth Radio show Thursday morning. "That's where I played. Like I said, the good thing, as we go through this, is I'm in a good situation where I'm at but that is my alma mater, that is where I played and you have a lot of good memories."

John Pawlowski was fired as the Tigers' baseball coach Monday after failing to reach the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years. The search for his replacement is just beginning, and Dunn is interested.

Dunn lettered at Auburn for four seasons, where he earned an All-American honor at catcher and helped lead the Tigers to a College World Series appearance in 1997.

Dunn is in his ninth season at Samford, where the Bulldogs advanced to their first ever NCAA regional in 2012.

Former Auburn coach Hal Baird publicly recommended Dunn for the Auburn job in an interview with AL.com on Wednesday. Baird, Auburn's all-time winningest coach, says Dunn is a "great fit" for what Auburn needs in its baseball program.

"I'm flattered to be brought up in the discussion and obviously reading stuff coach Baird said in the paper and on the Internet yesterday about me, really brought a smile to my face," Dunn said.

Auburn has failed to reach an NCAA regional in seven of the last eight seasons, a drastic drop from the final years of the Baird era, when the Tigers advanced to the postseason in seven of his last eight seasons. He retired in 2000 as Auburn's all-time winningest coach.

"You'd love to see your alma mater get to the level that, quite honestly, it was at the last time I left there in 1999," Dunn said.

Jacobs said Wednesday he will lead the search for Pawlowski's replacement and will lean on several former players for guidance.

"Having played there, having the love for a place you spent your college career, I'd love the opportunity to have a chance to sit down and just look at it," Dunn said.

Some MSU fan is saying we're going after NCSU's Elliott Avent...if true, he must be looking for a pay raise. He seems overqualified

He is odd though so maybe he thinks he can get a good retirement package out of us

13 posts. We really don't give a shite about baseball. I hope the new coach can turn it around.

Coaches I would go after:
1. Jim Schlossnagle – TCU
2. Scott Stricklin – Kent State
3. Mike Batesole – Fresno State
4. Mark Kingston – Illinois State

I hope so. This is a great time of year for baseball, and we're never apart of it.

@bmarcello: RT @aaronfitt: Hearing #Auburn might try to make big splash with hire. One very big name in mix for job could be Oklahoma's Sunny Golloway.

That would be nice. I'd rather not hire a mid major coach. We need someone who has proven he can lead a big program. So I like the sound of this.
