This is an old article, so I'm sorry if this has already been discussed.
I'm just curious what people think about the move to 14 teams now.
As a fan of the 12 team model, I always thought the big draw moving to 14 was to increase viewership and interest by "expanding the footprint".
Can anyone explain why this didn't happen?? Is it just a lag and we will catch up next season? Obviously Arkansas being a feature game at the end of last season several games when they were so bad hurt, as did showcasing Ole Miss late, but 15% is a pretty staggering drop.
And the blowout excuse doesn't hold water either, as there were several more blowouts in 2011 than in 2012 due to LSU and Bama destroying everyone they played.
Just curious if anyone has changed their opinion on the decision to expand, or taking a wait and see approach for another couple of years.

Auburn (aka "America's Team" aka "GOAT") was down so it's not exactly a surprise.

Take out games involving Missouri and recalculate please

The top six SEC teams accounted for 68 percent of the league's regular-season appearances on CBS. Yet only 5 of CBS' 14 SEC games paired two top-6 teams against each other
Because CBS doesn't recognize that the new Big 6 is Bama, LSU, A&M, UGA, UF, and USCe
A&M was only on CBS once

Only game w/ A&M drew a 6.1, so don't look there.
Mizzou's games against USC and Bama (2.5 and 2.1) weren't great, but also weren't the lowest draws. That honor went to USC/Arky.

TAMU - Bama rated 6.1 for 2nd highest rating so don't blame the mighty Ags.
Wonder what the final figures were, as that was published prior to the Bama - Georgia game.

CBS tanked on purpose. They knew we were renegotiating, so they made a play at some lower draws. What was the ENTIRE SEC rating across all networks. I will bet vital parts of my anatomy that it was up. Way up.

And two teams that are very far away from each other. I have no interest whatsoever in watching South Carolina-Arkansas, while I will watch Ole Miss-Miss State or Kentucky-Tennessee

This was the first SEC season with Texas A&M and Missouri. CBS showed Texas A&M and possible freshman Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel only once, and that came in a late-season showdown against then-No. 1 Alabama.
CBS is dumb...or smart... however you want to look at it.

Well right, but that was one of the teams we added specifically to bring in viewers. The St. Louis market was supposedly a big draw.
Their first game against a highly ranked SC should have been huge if that was true.
Obviously A&M didn't get showcased like they will this year, so we'll have to wait and see. And with Manziel, they will draw even more attention than they will when he's gone.
But even in the matchup with Bama late in the year with a Heisman campaign ranking up, they were nowhere near the numbers of LSU Bama the year before, though granted that was in primetime.
Shouldn't A&M's huge alumni and fanbase we heard so much about have made that ratings smash?
It was a huge late season game that also happened to be an instant classic.
Just wish we saw a more immediate bump from changing the structure of the entire league from what was the most successful model in college athletics.

But putting Missouri v. another SEC traditional power is not going to draw viewers nationally, unless Missouri is doing well. Some of the matchups on CBS this year were just awful.

they werent really down per se, just not "up" like in 2010.

I would add Arkansas and Auburn to that list
After the first month of the season who watching Auburn besides Auburn fans. Steep rate of fall had to affect viewing at the national level. As for the Hogs imagine if there were no motorcycle incident and how much higher their ratings would have been with Petrino. Throw in the Dores being better than the Vols and you have another huge eyeball switch.

Yep, very strange year in the SEC with Arkansas, Auburn and Tennessee all being at historic lows.

That was also a #1 vs #2 game with HUGE national title implications. A&M/Bama did not quite have that hype.
The Bama/LSU game "only" drew a 6.2 this past year compared to the 11-ish it drew in 2011.

I hear ya.
But all we heard about was A&M's massive alumni fanbase and Texas market.
With Manziel on fire, and playing their only CBS game against the undefeated #1 team in the country in November, I expected to see insane numbers for that game and was just surprised.

Very true. I can remember when Mizzou was in the Top 10 they were drawing good numbers on those ABC night games. I know the game vs #1 OU was good. Also believe the one vs KU when both teams were #2 and #3 did good because of the BCS bids.
