Authorities in Maryland say a 37-year-old man walked down railway tracks while shutting out the world and was hit by a train, despite the conductor's warning signal.

I just don't get how people accidentally get hit by a train. I mean frick I don't care how zoned out you are how does a train barreling down on you with the horn blowing not get your attention? All you have to do is take 4 steps to either side and you're clear.

I don't get it either. As a kid I lived close enough to walk to and played on train tracks. I could feel the rumble of the train from a mile away.

On the other hand, when I worked for the Sheriff's Dept here a few years back I worked a detail at the dirt track in Byram. One of the things we did was work the train tracks. The entrance to the race track crossed the train tracks but it did not have a crossing arm so we had to keep cars from stopping on the tracks. Amtrak trains would come through there and if you weren't paying attention it would come and go before you knew what happened. That thing had to be moving at 100 mph or more.
