Best strategy for house training a puppy?

Think I'm about to get a little Jack Russell terrier. He's a cute little fricker, but not potty trained quite yet.
Just rub his nose in it and say "bad dog!" or what? This is what my parent's did with the dogs we had when I was a kid.
It just seems cruel putting a dog's nose in it's own shite. Plus it seemed to take forever to work.
Any other ideas?
TIA

Spanking is what worked for my dogs

Dog's eat their own shite sometimes. I don't think they have too much of a problem with it.

We always would rub my dogs nose in it and put her outside. The first time it ever uses it outside give it a reward and keep doing it for a couple weeks. The only downside to that is every time it comes in it will drive you crazy wanting a treat. I know this is the obvious answer but it has worked for our two dogs

Crate train it.
coprophagia is one of the most repulsive habits a dog/puppy can pick up.

Don't rub his nose in it. The best thing to do is to get a crate, put him in the crate RIGHT after he eats, let him sit in there for like 15-20 minutes, and then take him outside.
If you miss, and he goes, just clean it up and remove the smell. If you catch him in the act, make a loud noise like AH AH or NO! and immediately put him outside to finish.
You always want to catch him in the act of bad behavior. Same with teeteeing. Once it's done and been sitting on the floor for a while, he won't have any idea why you are rubbing his nose in it, and it might make him afraid to go outside too.

I thought you were about to explain the match training you told me about a few years ago.

Crate training. Also, use a phrase every time it does its business. We used "Get it done" and our dogs go on command now.

I tell my male Lab "lets go kill a bush."

Same here! I gave command as they were going and then gave a treat right when they finished. It also REALLY helps to feed them at the same time each day and get a good schedule.
My boy dog goes #2 twice a day, girl dog only goes once a day.

We feed at the same time each day too, and they both finish eating in under 10 minutes.

This is what I'll be doing.
I'm all for spanking a pup and whatnot, but I can't rub his nose in his own shite. That's fricking horrible.
Thanks bella

Good. After 16 seconds a puppy's mind is on to newer and better ways to cause chaos. They are like ADD children. When giving a treat make sure it's small. Your pet store will have a good selection for you to choose. Also something I noticed a while back is that the formula for treats doesn't change from puppy to adult. The only difference is size. So if the larger treats are cheaper, and you can easily break them then settling for them won't be a problem. But KEEP IT SMALL.
Don't let it be something like cheese. FTR a cube of cheese to them is exactly like 4 slices of pizza or two cheeseburgers for us. Remember that next time you see a dog getting table scraps.

When you Caty he dog in the act, pick it up by the skin on the back of his neck, and carry him outside and put him in the grass. After catching my dog this way one time he knew where he was supposed to go. After that you just have to be sure you take the dog out often enough smothers aren't any accidents.
I am only saying this because you mentioned spanking the dog. Which is fine for some offenses. But be sure you do it right and when you do make the dog sit and come up and hit the dog under the chin. You don't want to hit overhand and come down on the dog or hit it from behind. I only say this because you seemed to be asking for training tips and that way you can avoid having the dog shrink back and cower. It has something to do with the dog distrusting you I think.
ETA: forgot to mention to use your other hand to hold the dogs mouth closed so when you come up and hit it, his tounge isn't sticking out

You don't scruff a dog. EVER. A puppy fine, but never an adult dog. It's different for cats, but do not scruff a dog. Much like our own As an adult the skin around the neck matures and it attaches. It can lead to you pulling the skin away or even behavioral problems.

I assume we were talking about a puppy

I agree with you on not doing that to an adult dog, but the area around the neck has the greatest amount of loose skin throughout the dog's life. Hence, it's always a good place to give a subcutaneous injection in that area.

You are so welcome!!
You will need patience. I am a terrier person, and they can be really stubborn, but my dogs are really well trained and it's not from rubbing a nose in anything. Jack Russells LOVE praise, and they tend to want to please. If you give treats start giving him one every time, then after he sort of gets the hang of it and starts doing it on command, give one every other time and pet and say sweet things the time you don't give treats. You don't want him to only go if he sees you have treats.
As far as punishing goes, I find that they really want to please and just a mean look or time out away from people tends to do a lot more than a spanking. And that's only if I catch them in the act. They really mind if you show your teeth when you are mad.
You have to remember to pet them lots and give them attention as soon as they are being good again. Memphis is right... it's like a child with ADD.
Also, for accidents, get something called Nature's Miracle at Petco. It's a little expensive, but it breaks down the enzymes so they don't keep going in the same place over and over. It is AWESOME. Also, higher quality pet food makes poops easier to clean up and also more predictable. Think of poops after McDonald's cheeseburgers vs poops after healthy food. It makes a huge difference.
Teeteeing is a little harder to predict. My boy dog had a hard time gauging the time between telling me and making it outside, so there was a time where there were lots of accidents at the door trying to run out in time. I just tried to pay better attention and would pick him up and carry him out until he learned to hold it. I couldn't get mad at him because you could tell he was trying.
You don't want them to associate going to the bathroom with being stressed out.

I'm going on record in saying that this is only like the 5th time she's ever said this. It was almost always me telling her she was right, and she was.

not to mention a jack Russell puppy is like an ADD child on Redbull.

Natures Miracle for hardwood or tile, and simple solution for carpet. Both work great on either, but in my experience I've come to that decision.

Exactly. And natural isn't always more expensive.
Plus say you feed Purina proplan. Take a good look at the ingredient list. Polypropylene Glycol is listed. It's what makes antifreeze antifreeze.
Pedigree is full of ingredients that lead to cancer. Plus it's listed as a "meat meal." WTF meat is used in that meal? Your guess is as good as mine.
The number one food is Orijen. It might break your bank though. Fromm, Nulo, And Holistic select all have great puppy formulas. Stay away from corn, wheat, soy. A dog's stomach is not made to digest corn. it leads to more frequent poops. Rice is fine as long as there isn't a grain allergy. FTR science diet and Blue buffalo are crap.
