Bama/LSU defensive backfield.

quote:

Cardinals acquired CB Javier Arenas from the Chiefs in exchange for FB Anthony Sherman.

A nickel corner, Arenas was expected to be a return ace when the Chiefs made him the No. 50 pick of the 2010 draft, but he's proven to be highly ordinary on special teams. He'll be a candidate to man the slot in Arizona, but the presence of Patrick Peterson and rookie Tyrann Mathieu means Arenas won't be featured on returns. Arenas played a career-high 724 snaps last season, but graded out as the No. 51 corner in Pro Football Focus' ratings. The Cards have now added Arenas, Antoine Cason and Jerraud Powers at cornerback. Mathieu will play safety, but could eventually see time in the slot.

ETA: I hereby christen him "The Javy Desert".

Cool that he's on the same team as Rashad but sucks he's on a team where he won't get to return kicks or punts.

PP7/TM7/Javy on the same team? Arenas won't return kicks, but if you needed him too, he's not a bad number three returner.

I could see him earning a spot in that secondary, I guess it just depends on how they use TM7 and if they think he can play on the outside, which I'm not confident about.

They have to pretty much treat Mathieu as he's not there right now as they transition him to Safety and see if he steers clear of drugs.

Arenas graded out tied for 11th in PFF's slot rankings, something the Cardinals needed. When they even put Peterson inside, he couldn't do much. Arenas graded out better in his snaps outside(75 snaps) than Peterson did inside(53 snaps) in '12.

So where do you think they'll play him?

Probably inside, between Peterson and Cason.

I could see Mathieu eventually being apart of 3 safeties sets, like the G-Men have done over the years and still do.

And to think I thought this couldn't turn into a flame fest on the SEC Rant. Silly me.

I wanted to mention Arenas had a better PR average and longest return in '12, but I'm gonna refrain

Had a thought, what does this trade mean for DeQuan Menzie? I remember something about him perhaps playing some Safety, but does anyone think he's in position to move into the Nickel role now for KC?

Dunta Robinson is playing the nickle, behind Flowers and Smith.

Menzie has to worry about a roster spot in general. It's a new staff, he has no pro experience on tape, and they drafted a CB/S type in Sanders Commings.

If he gets cut though I think a team will quickly sign him if they work him out

He's still young and a lot of potential

I'm also pissed TB didn't call if KC was shopping Arenas we need another solid CB for slot (assuming Wright to be the starter) and a PR/KR BAAAAD

I hope Demps stays with it and plays fball this yr for the Bucs though it seems like from his own account he is ready to play

He's still got his old DB coach and, although demoted, DC. So there might be some supporters in house still. Sanders Commings is a freak though, wouldn't want to be competing with him for a ST spot.

As long as he's healthy, he should get his fair shake...
