Just what has happened in my lifetime is extraordinary. It's really a great place to live, and not even just as a college student. We have just about everything Birmingham has, and top tier collegiate athletic events nearly every day. It's almost like living in a real city.
Yeah. I moved away in December after I graduated, and I think I am going to move back up there in a few months.

Edited for being too harsh on Bama Bird.

Actually, BB, I edited because I felt sorry for targeting someone with such an obviously small worldview.
I'd honestly prefer to think you were trolling than to think you really believe what you posted.

Small worldview? lol. I bet you haven't lived anywhere other than Birmingham. It sucks

Well you have no considerations for extreme statements as opposed to mild statements. What I said was that Tuscaloosa NEARLY has everything Birmingham does.

And you get back to the post that I edited because I felt sorry for you.
Sadly, your time in Ttown has not taught you what the word "nearly" means.
It's very obvious that you are under 25 and have never experienced anything outside of a smallish college town.

I've lived in Birmingham for 17 years; it's terrible. So why don't you actually try to prove me wrong instead of going on making baseless personal attacks?
Posted on 5/1/13 at 10:30 pm to Bama Bird
It's also clear that you don't know what a "baseless personal attack" is.
I went out of my way to make sure my daughter was exposed to arts, dining, and life in general in places like San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Nashville, Las Vegas, Austin, Chicago, Vancouver, Philly, Portland, Honolulu, DC, (and most certainly in her hometown of Birmingham) etc., before I moved her to Tuscaloosa, in the hopes that she would know what life is like in other places before college.
It's pretty clear to me that your parents failed to do the same for you, if you don't realize that a medium sized city with varied career, arts, educational, and dining options isn't better overall than a small college town that offers nothing more than bars that cater to 22 year-olds.
I loved college life in Tuscaloosa, but in terms of anything other than frat bars, it can't even compare to a real city. Even a medium sized one like Birmingham.

You and my son might have a lot in common, although he seems to prefer Holst to Mahler.
You shouldn't be so harsh about Birmingham, especially if you ever lived there. I have spent many years in other areas, and I can assure you that Birmingham offers at least as much as most cities of the same size. Especially in dining. If you are actually from the town, I'm sure that you know that Frank Stitt is one of the most respected chefs in the industry, and that Chris Hastings is a James Beard award winner. Not to mention George Reis, who might be as good as either. (Hastings is my favorite, btw. I have never had a better meal than his. Anywhere.) The only similar sized town with better dining options is probably New Orleans. (I'm not sure anyone in Tuscaloosa would know what a James Beard award is).
There are 7 high schools in the area in the top 1000 schools in America, including one that is consistently in the top 5 (JCIB). There are no decent educational opportunities for kids within 70 miles of Tuscaloosa.
There are a number of fine suburbs that other cities of similar size can't match. (I won't mention areas outside the Tuscaloosa city limits.)
The ASO is fantastic, if, as you claim, you are a fan of classical music. (I'm not aware of any such offering in Ttown)
There is excellent night life for young professionals in several districts. (This does not really exist in Tuscaloosa, except for 30 year olds who have yet to graduate)
Jobs? Check the market once you graduate and see where you can have an opportunity to establish a real career. (Neither is Charlotte or Nashville, etc., but there is a clear difference between Bham and Tuscaloosa).
Health care? Birmingham is home to a world class research hospital. Tuscaloosa is home to DCH, who cost Tyrone Prothro his career.
There is honestly nothing in Ttown that can compare to any of these things. Except for the bars that cater to kids. Tuscaloosa wins that one easily.
Like I said, I'm a huge fan and former resident, but to even make the suggestion that they are similar is absolutely silly.

I've spent a lot of time in both, but I'd prefer Boston to DC. If you can get past the accents.
Once you spend considerable time in other places, you probably won't feel the same way about where you're from. There may certainly be better places, but I can assure you that home is never as bad as you imagine it now. (Unless you're from Cullman. In that case, it really is that bad and you should go somewhere, anywhere, else.)
Out of curiosity, what part of Birmingham did you grow up in?

I apologize for my overly defensive tone- it's been a long week and I'd debate my own grandma if I got the chance at this point

There is something very special about Cullman county. And not in a good way. (I have some family there as well)
Good luck to you ending up in Boston or DC. You'll have a blast in either.
