Crazy to see how far they've fallen. How long do y'all think it takes Butch to turn them around? They really had potential last season but a terrible defense lost them a few shoot outs.

I think this season will be make or break for Tennessee tbh. The program needs stability more than anything and they have to be prayng to Neyland that Jones is the answer

I agree. Once they get some stability I think more kids will want to play there. With them being an SEC powerhouse with a lot of tradition will always reel in recruits.

It will be a long time until UT gets back to their old SEC self (strong defense, potent offense)

We will be bad this year. Another throw-away season. We will sign 30-32 in February. Need that to be a top 3-5 class and hope that momentum carries over in recruiting. That is Jones' only hope. If that doesn't work we will need to hire another coach. Rinse, repeat until we stumble upon the right guy.

Who knows how long it will take.

fricking never.

But for real, it will be a few years at least. This year, 7 wins would be a success and the year after will most likely be horrible. Complete crapshoot after that.

Success is predicated on Butch Jones and staff being able to coach, which nobody knows the answer to.

Eh, not really. This season certainly isn't a make or break season. The only season that has been said was last season.

Shula years at Bama:

26-24
Lost by 17 or more points: 3 times

Tennessee since 2008:

28-34
Lost by 17 or more points: 14 times

That's a pretty deep hole. They might be able to quickly rebound and leapfrog the Vanderbilts and Kentuckys, but I don't see them challenging for division titles for another three or four years. And that's if Butch Jones is really the man.

Believe it or not, UT used to be frickin good. Sucks not seeing them in at least the top half of the conference anymore.

That's the problem. Nobody knows what Butch is capable of yet. I guess we will see

I know you guys scoff at the thought of Vanderbilt as a contender but if Tennessee has another losing season while Vanderbilt reels off 9-10 wins, Knoxville will surely start to sweat? Add in the fact that UGA, UF, and USCe arent going anywhere. Stoops may make Kentucky respectable and Mizzou could also be a threat. Where does that leave Tennessee?

A lot of people have forgotten about UT being a legit powerhouse. Or they just started watching football the past few years.

Tennessee has very little talent on the roster, no reason to put much stock into a season where you are going to be winning 5-7 games, not much difference between 5 and 7 wins in my eyes.

As I said, the real test for Butch in years one and two will be recruiting. If he can recruit at an elite level as he has so far, then we will find out whether he can get it done on the field in year 3 and beyond.

It'll be harder than it has ever been.

Think about some of the teams they recruit against and some of their biggest rivals?

'Bama - back to being dominate, 3 / 4 national titles.
UF - 2 National Titles since 2006, a couple more BCS bowls.
UGA - A consistent 10+ wins a season which has sustained them as a top team in the East and the SEC overall.

and introducing

SC - at an all-time program high. Won our first division title a few years ago, back to back 11 win seasons, and dominated our Eastern foes over the last 3 seasons.
Vandy - been a while since they've been this good and this respected.

All these teams look to maintain their success and I'm willing to be all of them have players on their teams that UT offered and perhaps would have gotten in the past.

Can UT do it? Sure. But it's a lot harder than it would have been just a few short years ago.

I remember. I think the phrase "back on top" though is a bit of a misrepresentation.

You know who these people are, 17-18 year old recruits who only care about right now

*I say this from the prespective of an Auburn fan recruiting against the school in East Mississippi
