Who called their spring game "A-Day" first?

I was unaware of the fact that Auburn also refers to their spring game as A-Day until I read about that kid getting ejected from Auburn's "A-Day" game.

Really? You didn't know that until now?

I know I don't because I don't keep track of other teams spring football practices

100% honest.
I barely give a shite about LSU's spring game, much less Auburn's. The only reason I know Alabama calls their "A-Day" is because ESPN has been shoving it down our throat for a while now.

assumed it was AU-Day or Tiger Scrimmage or something before I found out a lot of schools just use the first letter of their name and "day".

Alright. I guess I just see it all the time on twitter.

Both have used that name for as long as anyone can remember. A-day is Auburn Day or Alabama Day
What do other schools call it

I have no idea. Spring games were not very well attended until the mid-1980s. It became an actual spectacle soon after, and hence "A-Day". Or several fan functions.

I'm not sure this is right. I remember the spring game always being called this since I was a little kid as well as my parents took me to every A-day game throughout the 80's and into the 90's.
I have never heard it stood for the first letter in the school's name. I don't think that is accurate. It has always been A-day though.

From what I can find, Alabama's first A-Day game was in 1958.
After much time with the Google, I can't find anything indicating when Auburn's first spring game was and when they started calling it A-Day.
I had always heard that "A-Day" was some sort of reference to Spring Break, which used to be called "AEA (Alabama Education Association) Week". But I could have totally made that up in my head.

This is what I thought as well. I googled AEA A-day and got American Evaluation Association earlier so thought maybe I was confused. I also was thinking A-day was the day in the spring we used to have games, sorta like a carnival at school every year for students, teachers, and family but then thought maybe that was May Day.
Anyway, now that another person said it, I do think it is related to AEA.
If it wasn't so late, I would just text my mom and ask her. She would know immediately. 40 years as a school teacher in Alabama. Maybe I'll ask her tomorrow. I am positive she will know if it is associated with AEA and the orgin of the A-Day name.

Back when I went to elementary school in Alabama I never thought of it as spring break, instead it was always AEA week and said so on the school calender.
50 years ago it was a big deal for teachers to get the week off and go to Birmingham for the AEA convention and shopping in the big city. Now not so much.
