16 Gamecock Commits on Perfect Games UnderClassmen ALL AMERICAN roster....wow....

4 are 1st Team All Americans
4 are 2nd Team All Americans

Make that 17 Gamecock commits now, with T.J. Hopkins being a "High Honorable Mention" prep prospect. That's just insane.....

Actually, I see that Harrison Smith is listed on the "Honorable Mention" list, which I guess is a tier below the "HIGH Honorable Mention" list. Smith gives USC 18 total commits listed on PG's listings, overall....

ahhh, nevermind. PG has Smith listed on both their honorable mention AND high honorable mention lists. I guess by mistake. So it's still 17, which is still....just......sick.....

Notes from JW:

So here's the behind the scenes deal on Hopkins ... He was committed to College of Charleston at one point but thought he could be an SEC or ACC type of player, so he decommitted and tried to gain some interest from South Carolina and Clemson. He wanted to stay in state to play college baseball.

This was a little bit like a football recruit for me. I was getting a bunch of conflicting information about him from different people around him. I would have bet you a dollar to a donut on Monday that he would be a Clemson Tiger this Saturday. I, obviously, was wrong.

South Carolina and Clemson both went to see him play last Monday. He didn't have an offer from either school and it was basically an audition for him to get an offer. Clemson informed his high school coach that they were going to offer him this weekend if he'd come up for the game. South Carolina decided on Wednesday to offer. Hopkins was at South Carolina for Max Schrock's walk-off and the walk-off wins against Tennessee. The atmosphere and love for the baseball program won him over and that played a role in wanting to come to South Carolina.

As a player, South Carolina has won a lot of games with players like him. I'd say right now that his best attribute is his speed. He's not a burner, but he typically reads the game well and is quick. His bat pretty good as well and has gotten a lot better since I saw him this summer. I have some reservations about him defensively and think he's a corner outfielder kind of guy right now. I'm high on his athleticism though. I'm high on his toughness. He grinds.

Hopkins, 2016 baseball commitment Sawyer Bridges and 2015 offensive lineman Zack Bailey are a trio of best friends. It wouldn't surprise me if Hopkins is in Bailey's ear a good bit about joining him at South Carolina. He's got about the same amount of influence as Bridges does - maybe not quite as much.

I like the pickup for South Carolina. I'm not going to say Hopkins is a world beater right now but he has a ton of upside. I like the way his game is progressing in the times I've seen him. Nice work by Sammy Esposito on keeping Hopkins close and making him feel good while he made the decision on whether or not to offer. We'll see how it plays out but I like the move.

Recruiting

-- A new name starting to gain some traction in both the baseball and football recruiting world is Jared Padgett (Graceville, Fla./Graceville Vocational), who is a left-handed pitcher in baseball and a wide receiver on the football team. Padgett is an under-the-radar player in both sports predominately because of his high school’s small size and lack of competition. In the baseball world, he’s starting to gain some acclaim as Florida State, LSU, South Carolina and some others are starting to talk to him. The Gamecocks caught his eye during the College World Series championships and he’s going to make a trip to Columbia before making a decision. The Seminoles have already tabled a nice offer.

-- Class of 2016 uncommitted right-handed pitcher Tyler Mondile visited South Carolina with his coach and his father for two days over the weekend. He had a great visit getting to spend a lot of time with the coaching staff. He took a tour of the campus and was impressed with the facilities and the campus. Ranked as the No. 17 player in the country by Perfect Game, he’s a prospect who is going to be able to write his own ticket to any school. He’s in the middle of visits now but Virginia is one of the main programs to watch.

---

Conway headed to SMC: Class of 2014 baseball commitment O'Kevius Conway (Clinton/Clinton) will attend Spartanburg Methodist next season instead of South Carolina Carolina. Conway will be able to play right away for the Pioneers and the door is open for him in the future with the Gamecocks.

Conway had an ACL injury in December 2012. He is not to the point where he could come in and play immediately for South Carolina and it's in his best interest to go to a junior college where he can play early and get at-bats. Conway met with Gamecocks head coach Chad Holbrook on Thursday to make the decision.

-- Class of 2016 uncommitted left-handed pitcher Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry) will visit North Carolina this week for the first time. UNC assistant coach Scott Forbes was by a couple of weeks ago to see Huggins pitch and thought enough of him to invite him up on a visit. The Tar Heels have always been a school that interested Huggins, but we believe that he will ultimately stay in state and decide between South Carolina and Clemson.

Huggins is a Clemson legacy and has been on several visits to both Columbia and Clemson. Once his trip to Chapel Hill is complete, he will have visited his top three schools and taken the full tour at each place. Huggins has stated publicly he would like to commit sometime this summer but it isn’t completely out of the question a decision happens before then. Huggins’ season ends this week but he’s unlikely to play as he’s had some back soreness over the last couple of weeks.

-- Another uncommitted 2016 player to keep an eye on is third baseman Carson Spiers (Greenville/Greenville), who is the nephew of former Clemson first round draft pick and 12-year MLB veteran Bill Spiers. Carson’s father, Michael, also played baseball at Clemson for four years.

Carson has been recruited by South Carolina for baseball since coming to a camp last December. He’s been down to several games this season, most recently for the Florida series. He is, however, an All-State quarterback for Greenville High School’s football team and is starting to earn some interest in that sport as well. He was invited to Clemson for their Orange & White Spring Game and made that visit. He’s up in the air as to what sport he wants to play in college but, as it stands now, he’s likely to focus on one at the next level. Baseball is probably his ticket for the future but he’s going to participate in 7-on-7s and do some football camps this summer as well as play for the Diamond Devils showcase baseball team.

The Gamecocks’ coaching staff has positioned itself very well for Spiers, who really enjoys the atmosphere within the program as far as how the coaching staff relates to the players. There probably won’t be much movement on his recruitment, regardless of sport, until this summer.

-- Another 2016 prospect to follow is uncommitted outfielder Brandon Tillmon (Lexington/River Bluff), who is going to be a two-sport prospect at the next level. Tillmon is a linebacker on the football field and has made unofficial visits to South Carolina, Clemson and UCF. For the Gamecocks, he would likely find himself at the SPUR position. The feeling is that he is talented enough to earn football scholarship offers, which would render any baseball scholarship offer moot. He is going to camp at several schools this summer for football, including South Carolina.

He’s a tremendous athlete and can play several places on the baseball field. He sees himself as an outfielder though, which is probably his best position. He has tremendous power and finished second in the state last season (as a freshman) in home runs when he was edged during the playoffs by former senior Nick Pappas, who is now playing everyday at College of Charleston. Tillmon has tremendous bat speed and is going to be a player coveted by every baseball school, but we’ll have to see which schools offer for football because playing both sports is extremely important to him.

South Carolina landed its fourth commitment of the 2016 class early Thursday morning with the pledge of right-handed pitcher Duncan Callahan (Dillon/Dillon). Gamecocks recruiting coordinator Sammy Esposito scouted Callahan on Wednesday night when the right-hander allowed one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts over four innings pitched.

Insider Notes:
quote:

Callahan had a little bit of an elbow problem that didn't require surgery that kept him out the first part of the season. This year, he's thrown 11 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks. He has 22 strikeouts to his credit so far. This summer, he's pitching for the Evoshield Canes.

Callahan has attended a couple South Carolina camps and is the younger brother of former USC signee Jamie Callahan, who signed with the Boston Red Sox after being drafted in the second round in 2012. His fastball is pretty powerful for his age running up to 91 on Wednesday night, which also came while pitching on a broken toe. Callahan throws a fastball, sinker, curve and changeup.

Callahan didn't pitch last summer and is just getting back on the mound, so not many schools have seen him. South Carolina is where he's always wanted to go though so when that offer came, it was a no-brainer for him. The only other school he had some fleeting interest in was Florida. He's currently ranked as the No. 10 player in SC for his class but I expect that ranking to vault this summer.

Recruiting

-- One of South Carolina’s top 2016 targets, left-handed pitcher Ryne Huggins (Newberry/Newberry) took his visit to North Carolina over the weekend to see the Tar Heels take on Virginia Tech. He went to the game on Saturday night and took a tour of the facility and campus and had a sit-down meeting with the coaching staff on Sunday prior the game. Huggins, who was on the trip with his entire family, left prior to Sunday’s game.

The feedback we received following the visit is that South Carolina has a narrow lead in the race for his commitment. Clemson and North Carolina are running even and are not too far behind the Gamecocks. At one point, Huggins wanted to make a commitment over the summer. It isn’t out of the question he makes a decision sooner than that though.

-- The biggest unofficial visitor to campus this weekend was 2015 left-hander Jared Padgett (Graceville, Fla./Graceville Vocational), who is a two-sport athlete at his high school but wants to focus on baseball at the college level. He’s at least going to make his college decision based on baseball and not football and if something comes up with the school he chooses, he will cross that bridge at that point in time.

Padgett took a two-day visit to South Carolina spending Saturday and Sunday taking the full tour and going to Saturday’s game. He wrapped up the visit on Sunday morning meeting with the coaches before departing back to the Sunshine State. The Gamecocks have offered and do want him to commit. The chief competition is Mississippi State with Florida State and Florida also in the picture. Word is though, he wants to go out of state to play baseball.

LHP Padgett picks MSU

quote:

Mississippi State landed left-handed pitcher Jared Padgett (Graceville, Fla./Graceville Vocational) on Tuesday afternoon when he committed to the Bulldogs over Florida, Florida State and South Carolina. Padgett, who stands 6-foot-4 and 198 pounds, threw 53.1 innings and struck out 125 on the season.
“The atmosphere at Mississippi State was unreal,” Padgett said. “I chose it because in life, our purpose is to glorify God in all our abilities and I felt that MSU would keep my head right physically and spiritually. The decision wasn’t my own but of God and I fully believe that he is leading me in the right direction."

Recruiting

quote:

-- Class of 2014 signee Alex Destino (Weaverville, N.C./North Buncombe) finished his regular season hitting .556 with 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 37 RBIs at the plate and finished with an 8-1 record with a 1.64 ERA in 51.1 innings pitched. A left-hander, Destino struck out 86 and walked 30. In his final game out, he pitched a no hitter.

It only takes one team to draft a player high but in our conversations, right now, it seems like the school option is still trending with still a month remaining before the MLB Draft. The Gamecocks could certainly use his bat and power potential in the lineup next season, in addition to his 90 mph arm.

-- As far as other draft prospects go, the player who seems to be gaining the most momentum far as upward movement is infielder Madison Stokes (Columbia/A.C. Flora). He’s been a player to watch throughout the process and scouts were down on him a little bit early in the year but they’re starting to like him more recently. In fact, assistant coach Sammy Esposito will be at Stokes’ game on Monday night.

Destino and Stokes are the two chief players to track in the buildup to the draft next month. The rest of the players are fairly cut and dried. We expect Junior Harding (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge) and Brandon Murray (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) to sign professional contracts and the rest should be at school.

-- Class of 2017 uncommitted infielder Noah Campbell (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) only has a year of high school baseball under his belt but he’s getting close to making a college decision. Campbell was favoring South Carolina and Vanderbilt but has since added Miami to the list of schools he’s considering. He’s been on trips to all three places and should have a decision early in the summer. Campbell would be the first commitment of the 2017 class for the Gamecocks and is one of few players the staff is actively pursuing.

Really tough news for SMC and No. 1 pitcher Dylan Rogers (Union). South Carolina signee has complete tear of elbow ligament, needs surgery.

Whittle:

Class of 2014 signee Dylan Rogers (Union/Spartanburg Methodist) suffered a torn ligament in his elbow during the ninth inning of the NJCAA Eastern District Championship last Friday, according to Spartanburg Herald Journal reporter Todd Shanesy. Rogers, who signed with the Gamecocks last November, is one of six right-handed pitchers in the recruiting class.

2014 Signee Brandon Murray Likely Coming to School

quote:

On Wednesday, Murray sent out a letter to the MLB Scouting Bureau detailing his bonus requirements to hedge on his commitment to the Gamecocks and join the professional ranks. While he didn’t want to disclose the number, the slot is safely inside the first round.

quote:

He will sit 92-93 pretty consistently but he's been up to 96 at a Perfect Game event and I've heard he's been as high as 97. He's a little bit like Vogel. He's more of a two-pitch guy right now but he has great potential

MLB Draft Bible: Will the recruits become drafted or go to school?

quote:

LHP/OF Alex Destino: For quite a while, it looked like Destino was trending towards the professional ranks. He had a great summer with Team USA flashing some fastballs in the low 90s from the left side. Some scouts saw him as a potential Carlos Rodon, N.C. State’s lefty who will go in the top five picks overall this year. Destino was unable to replicate those summer numbers with any amount of consistency this high school season. He’s fallen off the radar for a lot of teams since then as a pitcher. He, however, is unlikely to get the kind of money he wants. Confidence level he comes to school: High

quote:

RHP Junior Harding: One of the first players to commit in the 2014 class, Harding is one of the least likely to come to school and has been for a long time. The hard-throwing righty who will get his fastball up to 97 mph on the radar gun should find himself in the seventh round range. That slot should be good enough for him to skip school. Confidence level he comes to school: Very low

quote:

RHP Brandon Murray: One person in the South Carolina program told me the Gamecocks got one victory in the SEC Tournament. While the team was in Hoover, the coaches and Murray had several conversations and the belief is now the right-hander is going to come to school. Murray, like Harding, can run his fastball into the 97 mph range but he sits pretty comfortably around 92-93. Confidence level he comes to school: Moderate

quote:

OF Clark Scolamiero: Scouts love his athleticism and makeup, his arm and defensive abilities. But he also has a desire to come to school for three years. Teams like the Cardinals, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mariners and Pirates have all been after Scolamiero hard but he’s just not going to get enough money for his liking to skip school. Confidence level he comes to school: High

quote:

INF Madison Stokes: When Stokes flipped his commitment from The Citadel to South Carolina, we wrote he likely wouldn’t see campus. Since then, Stokes has gone back and forth between school and professional baseball. Right now, he’s trending towards skipping school. Confidence level he comes to school: Low

quote:

C Hunter Taylor: The scouts have started to turn up the heat a little bit on Taylor lately but the belief is he will still end up at South Carolina. He’s OK to admit publicly that his price tag is a half million dollars and a team that meets that demand will get him to skip school. Confidence level he comes to school: High

quote:

RHP Braden Webb: A power arm from the right side, Webb was getting some major heat before having season-ending Tommy John surgery in April. A team may still pick him late in the draft as a courtesy. Confidence level he comes to school: Very high

Looks like after the draft our class is really going to stay intact, I suspect none of them are going pro which is really nice to see.

Junior Harding however is very unlikely to be in a South Carolina uniform next year, mainly due to academics it looks like. We won't know for sure until late June or early July however.

South Carolina landed its fifth commitment in the 2016 baseball recruiting class as Carlos Cortes (Ovieda, Fla./Lake Howell) made his verbal pledge. An infielder with a shot to play at second base or third base, Cortes is part of the Orlando Scorpions showcase program.

Insider Notes:

quote:

Cortes is a left-handed hitter and pitcher. The plan right now is to use him as either a second or third baseman. Likely a second baseman. For those astute baseball minds, you're probably wondering how a left-handed pitcher also plays in the infield. Well, he can throw with either arm. When he plays the infield, he throws right-handed. He also plays some as an outfielder and has been used as a catcher before, too. To say Cortes is versatile is an understatement.

A player that recruiting coordinator Sammy Esposito made note of at the State Games was corner infielder Jake Holtzapple (Matthews, N.C./Providence). The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has been on the Gamecocks’ radar for a while and he’s coming down on a visit today (Monday) to see the campus and meet with the staff. Holtzapple is ranked as the No. 100 player in the country by Perfect Game and is the fifth-best player in the 2016 class in the Tar Heel state.
