If everything remained as is, we were all set for our roster for next season's basketball team. With a maximum of 13 scholarship players we were at the limit with Smith, Slawson, Leonard, Richardson, Geathers, Williams, Carrera, Kacinas, and Chatkevious all returning and with the addition of Tyrone Johnson transferring from Villanova and the 3 new incomers McKie, Thornwell, and Ringer. Ellington was on FB scholly, so he was like a walk-on....

But Coach Martin has accepted yesterday the commitment of 3* 2013 prospect Duane Notice, so there will HAVE to be some attrition from the roster of players who still have eligibility left. Judging how the team performed last season, this may not be a bad thing...

Coach Martin is also in very good standing at the moment with Rivals 4* and Rivals150 6-9 C Demetrius Henry, who is down between us and Miami. We're also in solid position with 6-8 PF Darryl Reynolds, 6-3 combo G Shadell Millinghaus, his prep teammate 6-5 SF Leroy Fludd, in-state 6-0 PG Jaylen Shaw, and 6-1 PG Dominique Hawkins...

That's a LOT of offers for incoming talent for a program that's already set for a maximum 13 scholly players for next season. Obviously we don't get ALL of those, and I'm sure some offers are "plan B" type offers in case others offered go elsewhere.

As I said, Henry is down to Miami and us, Reynolds has us leading and is expected to announce in late April, Millinghaus has us in the lead but is waiting to take all his visits first before announcing. Fludd also has us as a leader and wants to play with Millinghaus. We've made an impression on Shaw with the offer but I haven't read anything specifically stating what his leaders are at this point. Hawkins - a KY product - wants to be a Wildcat of course but they haven't offered him yet and he recently visited them. He probably will get the offer...

Either way a tremendous amount of activity for the program that was seemingly set in personnel...Martin is obviously going to clear house and reload with fresh talent as quickly as possible. IMO no position is safe, although I'd bet the 3 he's already brought in are among the safest as well as Bruce who isn't taxing the program a scholarship spot anyways.

A lot of news will be coming out regarding the program during this month, so stay tuned....

Good, b/c this past season looked awful, and there's nowhere to go but up.

I think we'll end up dropping 3-5 players and picking up 3-5 new ones.

I have no problem with Coach Martin dropping a bunch of our current players to restock our team with fresh talent.

We have been awful in basketball for far too long and if it takes dropping current players so Coach Martin can get his recruits in earlier, I welcome it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Smith was gone.

I have to say, our PG play drove me crazy this year, especially the lazy passes that led directly to turnovers, often in crucial situations. Then watching the NCAAT, seeing all those teams that had guys who could handle the ball and conduct the O. We need a real passer/distributor at the point.

I hate to bash a player, but Eric Smith was awful at times this year. His biggest contribution was the game-winner vs. Ole Miss. He is just not a D-1 point guard, plain and simple.

I hope that Thornwell and McKie will make an immediate impact next year. I have watched Thornwell play since he was in the 8th grade, and the kid can flat out score. Word is that he has put on about 20 lbs since he played for Lancaster, too.

Both Justin and Duane are considered shooting guards, although Duane can play point as well. Tyrone is a PG, and we'll certainly return Bruce as our lone guy with experience. Even Thornwell is considered a SG per 24/7sports, although he's more like a swingman who'll play SF at times.

With us still going for Hawkins (unlikely) and Shaw (very likely), looks like we're trying for at least one more true #1: next season we won't have Tyrone for the first 10 games as he finishes up sitting out his one-year for transferring, and Bruce won't be with us again until after December. That would leave us pretty thin and with only shooting guards to man the offense unless we can get in another #1 to help out...

Anyone else miss the golden years of Carolina basketball? I was actually lightly recruited by Coach Fogler in '97. my favorite game of all time was at home on CBS against Cincinnati in double or triple overtime. Antonio Grant went off that game. Kid was a stud for a guard and he and his brothers were hella football players out of North Augusta. Getting to go in both locker rooms and seeing how Coach Huggins acted def sealed the deal that day for all 3 of us that we're being recruited. We'd played for Ken Wright at Westside in Augusta and he was all tough love. But Huggins made Bobby Knight look like a Girl Scout. Lol Tony Kitchens was there that day as well. What a waste of god given size he was. Good memories not many good ones lately I say attrition is needed to get the program straight. A lot of those kids don't belong on this level and most have already given up.

The mid-90s were pretty fun. I used to go to the Eddie Fogler Basketball Camp every year and hang out with BJ McKie, William Gallman, Ryan Stack, Antonio Grant and that whole crowd. Loved going to games with my dad down at FMA. Place used to be electric. I skipped school the next day after we beat Kentucky the night BJ went off.

PG Jaylen Shaw has committed to USC today:

2013 point guard Jaylen Shaw of Hartsville HS has committed to South Carolina today.

That makes 5 the number of commits for our 2013 class, and 2 more than our current roster size can allow...

2013 6-6, 180 SF Reggie Theus, Jr. committed to USC today according to GamecockCentral.com. He makes the 6th prospect to our 2013 class, and 3 now over the maximum scholarship limit for 2013 barring early departures from returning players on the roster...

He looks like a player, well-spoken. Odd form but with a ton of ability.

His Dad sure was a great player.

Can't remember the last time we took a player out of California.

We are in good position for both Reynolds and Henry....Reynolds is scheduled to make his choice at 2pm today, just minutes away. He is reportedly down to USC and Villanova. Henry announces at 10am tomorrow between USC and Miami...

Ahh well.....Reynolds chooses Villanova over USC. TheBigSpur was already placing Henry as a lean to USC, but was at best 50-50 on Reynolds as they had a hard time getting a read on him. Hopefully we fair much better with Henry...

Jaylen Shaw has reportedly signed his LOI with USC today...he was the final commitment for the '13-'14 class to sign, apparently wanting to wait for his mother to check out/visit the school before doing so.

So at this point our current class consists of (Rivals Rankings):

Sindarius Thornwell (6-5, 180 SG) 4* #43 on Rivals150 & #11 SG
Demetrius Henry (6-9, 210 C) 4* #100 on Rivals150 & #17 C
Desmond Ringer (6-9, 260 C) 3*
Duane Notice (6-2, 195 PG) 3*
Jaylen Shaw (6-1, 175 PG) 3*
Reggie Theus Jr. (6-6, 180 SF) 2*
Justin McKie (6-3, 175 SG) NR

And also add transfer PG Tyrone Johnson (6-3, 185), who was a 4* PG and #52 in the Rivals150 for the 2011 cycle and #11 PG that cycle.

Coach Martin announced some departures from the program which was expected with the large incoming class. Eric Smith, Damien Leonard, RJ Slawson, and Brian Richardson will all pursue their final year of college eligibility elsewhere.

The 4 departures leaves 5 scholarship players returning from last season:

SG Brenton Williams
PF/C Carlton Geathers
PF/C Laimonas Chatkevicius
SF Michael Carrera
SF Mindaugas Kacinas

Add the 7 incoming prospects plus Johnson who technically is already in the program, and that's a full 13 scholarship roster for 2013/14. Of course also add in Bruce Ellington who's on a FB scholly. There's also been whispers that Geathers could be given a medical hardship waiver which would end his college playing career if his injury prevents him from playing.

This would free up another roster spot and there have been reports that Coach Martin is still out there on the recruiting trail (final signing deadline for this class is May 15th I think). So there still may be some changes in store for the program's roster...

One thing to note from all the newcomers:

Our Guard roster from last year:

5-9 Ellington
5-11 Smith
5-11 Williams
5-10 Phillips (walk-on)
6-0 Austin (walk-on)
6-2 Page

LaShay Page was our tallest G as a PG last season, and he didn't last long on the eligible roster. Next year the #1 and #2 positions will look like this:

5-9 Ellington
5-11 Williams
6-1 Shaw
6-2 Notice
6-3 Johnson
6-3 McKie
6-5 Thornwell

Thornwell is listed as a SG by Rivals, but he's essentially a swingman who can also play SF. Shaw, Notice, and Johnson are all PGs. The height and overall size of the USC backcourt has taken a sizable leap with the newcomers. Coach Martin has really done a good job adding size to the team...
