Florida's president, Bernie Machen, told CBSSports.com the league will eschew the 16-team superconference model unless "some ace jewel called us and said, 'Can you help us?'"

"We haven't had any calls like that," Machen said. "We haven't made any calls."

That's interesting. I think most conferences are in a similar holding pattern right now.

BS, it all comes down to whether or not the ACC loses the lawsuit against Maryland.

If they do the ACC will be gutted, if not, things probably stay the same for a little while.

16 is going to happen because ESPN wants it and they control the flow of money right now.

Actually, expansion is happening because of conference television networks, not ESPN...

that's the purpose of the networks, to take control of your own deal

ESPN is going to be running the SEC network and has been involved in the expansion process every step of the way.

Everything rests on what the B1G wants to do...if they expand again, it will probably be Virginia and North Carolina...

And if that happens, I could see them grabbing Georgia Tech and then the next domino would be Florida...

some ace jewel

I wonder what schools would be considered "ace jewels"? Ignoring the question of whether they'd ever want to join, what schools in other conferences would you consider "ace jewels"?

B1G: Michigan, Ohio State, possibly Penn State and Nebraska...???

ACC: North Carolina, Virginia Tech, FSU...???

Big XII: Oklahoma, Texas (DO NOT WANT, but would be of that status)

Independent: Notre Dame

Pac 12: USC, Stanford, Oregon, UCLA...???

Big East:

What "ace jewels" are there anywhere, other than these? Most don't make sense for geographical reasons, FSU and Texas would be excluded because we are already in those states and UF and A&M wouldn't want them, and likely none others besides UNC and VT would ever want to join. Even those two would be longshots.

Since there are only a handful of "ace jewels" out there, and we aren't likely to get any of them (except possibly UNC and VT), further expansion would probably have to involve next-tier schools. What would be the point of that? I can't believe even ESPN would want that, would they? What would be so attractive to ESPN about a huge 16-team conference anyway?

the ace jewels change depending on conference...

For the SEC, North Carolina is an ace jewel...

There aren't any ace jewels out there other than UNC.

If Maryland wins out, the B1G will go after Virginia next. In an effort to keep them out of the south, the SEC will cave to UNC and also take Duke with them.

I get what you are saying, but if Virginia Tech called up and said things just aren't working out with the ACC and they've arranged their exit, we would be at 15 members tomorrow.

Oklahoma and UNC would be the perfect way to top off at 16.

But that would probably require both the ACC and BIG12 to collapse.. which probably won't happen.

I'm really not sure why people think VPI is all that attractive. They really aren't good at anything but football and it's built on one coach. They have a decent fan base but not overwhelming. I think UVA is a better long term buy. They are a better academic add and have a much much much deeper AD.

The reason A&M was a crown jewel is we are a cultural fit, bring a strong overall AD, and are an academic plus. Culturally VPI fits well and I'd have no objection to their add but I don't think they are quite there otherwise to be a "crown jewel". The only realistic one I see is UNC tbh.

True. I just don't see UNC coming to the SEC before Va Tech. And OU won't go anywhere or CAN'T go anywhere with out Okie State.

You forgot to mention they come with that Texas sized ego that you're so prominently displaying.

Agreed. OU is not going anywhere without OSU finding a home. It would be bad for the state of Oklahoma for OSU to fall out of a major conference. The AD is the marketing arm of state universities and to crush a fellow state university by sending them to a midmajor just isn't realistic.

You can say they are looking out for themselves but they are a state entity and the state itself is harmed by such a move. For this reason, Texas is going nowhere without Tech. It's the political realities. Us separating from Tech in particular was one of the best aspects of the conference switch imo. They may be unable to get a major conference invite on their own and they are no longer our cross to bear in any way shape or form.
