Does a doctor tell the parents?

How does it work?

Left handed questions.

I would assume they start using their left or right hand, and determine that they are left or right handed.

Or is there some process I don't know about either?

Hand preference is highly genetic. It's not determined; it's observed. Children typically show a dominant hand by age 2-3.

Some children may be ambidextrous until they're 5 or 6, when they finally make a choice.

If they start fricking the same sex, they are left handed.

I am left handed. When I was very little and went to dance class, I always turned the wrong way and they had to put me on the end until I got older and trained myself to turn the same way as everyone else.

In all seriousness, there is a continuum of handedness, some people who are left handed are able to do more fine motor skills with their right hands, but they haven't figured out if that is environmental. There is a complex genetic component that goes along with it as well.

I strongly favored my left hand pretty early on, but I am strongly left handed. I am also left footed and left eye dominant. Some left handed people are right footed and some are right eye dominant, or any combination of the three.

It is a right brain, left brain thing. Ever heard of the Herman Brain Dominance Index (HBDI)? Interesting if you have a little time to check it out.

It should be a simple matter of observation. When he eats, what hand does he use to pick up a fork or spoon?

My parents thought I was left handed for the longest time. I'm weird though.

Throw righty
Bat lefty
Kick lefty
Shoot basketball left handed

I'm all sorts of arse backwards.

I do everything right handed except drive, and it feels like if I wanna carry something I'll use my left hand, but that's probably so I can use my right hand to open doors/shake hands or whatever.

It's definitely genetic. My oldest brother is left-handed, and so is his oldest son. It was just a natural preference. I am right-handed, but some things I can do with my left just about as well, like painting or driving. I play the piano though, so that strengthened my left hand abilities I'm sure.
