There is no way to compare. Kirby has had mega success in his short time as a defensive coordinator UNDER SABAN. Johnson has had a long career and no one holding his hand the entire time. How about we revisit this thread when Kirby nutts up and takes a HC position.

Great idea. Let's wait until Smart becomes a HEAD COACH to decide whether he is a good defensive coordinator.

I like how Johnson toed the party line and said that the Gus O would help his D.

I actually laughed at this as well.

Would you prefer that I edit my post to say "when Smart stops living in the shadow of Saban's success"?

The point is that good or bad, Ellis Johnson has done it on his own for decades whereas Kirby won't even take the risk of being DC at top programs like UGA.

He's starting to look like someone who's afraid of falling flat on his face

One of those is a first choice when there's an open position and the other is a short term gap filler, and always has been. One perspective to consider.

We would know for sure when Kirby Smart took over a defense while not under Nick Saban, though.

This. No way to know.

Before Smart went to work under Saban, of course Ellis was much better. Now I am sure Smart has learned a lot, so no way to know until he gets out on his own, which won't be as a DC anyway.

What has Ellis Johnson done on his own for decades? Other than go 0-12 at Southern Miss....other than a brief stop at the Citadel he has been a career assistant. He was terrible at Bama under Dubose.

Kirby has the best situation of any coordinator out there.......why should he rush into to 2nd rate program?

How can you compare Ellis' time at Al Obama with Smart's? Just a hunch, but maybe the talent level is a little better now?

And very good at USCe under an offensive hands off the D HC. Dubose was an idiot and he struggled with bama. He upgraded big time at USCe and did well.

If that is a slam at AU you're an idiot.

Nevermind, we all know you're an idiot already. Congrats.

You don't know that to be true. Don't worry, EJ is a step up from Roof.

I think it'd be smarter to judge Ellis Johnson based on what he did at South Carolina, since that was actually recent. Judging from he did at Alabama way back in 1999 is kind of dumb, IMO.

Not all defensive coordinators are good head coaches. Remember that guy named Gene Chizik? He coached some of the best defenses in college football during his time at Texas and Auburn, and now...? You saw what the defense looked like at Auburn. Besides, it's retarded to judge Ellis Johnson by what he did back in 1999. How about we judge him by his defenses at South Carolina? They were pretty damn good.

We all see the purpose behind your terrible post though, but at least you try hard.

Settle the frick down......you sure are insecure......I was pointing out that Johnson has basiaclly been a carrer assistant. I never said the AU job was 2nd rate because its not....

But y'all sure couldn't close the deal to land Kirby?

Auburn stole EJ away from SMiss. A real coup, very clever, got him without a fight.
