Is Ellis Johnson a better defensive coordinator than Kirby Smart?

I know Southern Miss agrees.

He has a pretty good track record as a DC.

I doubt it.

We would know for sure when Kirby Smart took over a defense while not under Nick Saban, though.

This is a stupid thread. There is no way to compare. Kirby has had mega success in his short time as a defensive coordinator at Bama. Johnson has had a long career. How about we revisit this thread in 25 years.

I will be disappointed if I am still around (would end up regretting how much I am drinking and eating). Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to comment now.

Shite. I don't know who's better. I guess I will take Smart since he has Saban brining in talent while Ellis will have to spend half his time combing Jonna's hair.

If maturity level is indicative of age, most on the rant will be 30ish in 25 years.

We were really pleased with the job he did when Dubose was coach. That 3-8 Alabama team in 2000 was one for the ages.

His defenses at Alabama from 1997-2000 were legendary.

Seems like I remember AU hiring Ellis and then announcing a few days later they were hiring a "co-defensive coordinator."

Sound like an "Oh frick" moment to me.

Ellis Johnson was Alabama's defensive coordinator under Dubose. We were pretty terrible for most of his stay. In 1999, we were solid in the front seven, but the secondary was awful. Anytime Bama faced a decent quarterback, it was a train wreck. Would not trade 1 Kirby Smart for 10 Ellis Johnsons.... Hope this helps....
